Chertsey CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 10 May 2026 at 2pm
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
Old Father Time. After watching the Eton v Harrow game at the Headquarters on Friday, Warnes Sr and Jr (plus PV) arrived at Chertsey very aware of the Old Enemy (perhaps in separate ways), and so the game unfolded very much as a 'roll back the clock' affair. Spoilt by having a whole nine players this week, we took the field (after losing the toss) with two Chertsey players kindly stepping into the breach; Dav Ranu made his season's debut, along with Ben Dale; PV made his first appearance for some three years. Warnes Jr and Dav Ranu opened the bowling and duly demolished the top order, reducing Chertsey to 26-5; Ben Dale defied his 50+ years with an absolute blinder of a catch, diving low down to his right and snaring the ball in those banana-like fingers a whole inch off the ground. Our 15yo Chertsey ringer, Theo Edwards, bowled an excellent spell and didn't exactly let up the pressure: 56-7. Warnes Sr snagged the eighth, before their seconds player, Aish Lyons, hit a top-notch 68 and more than doubled the score before Warnes Jr picked up his third. 142 all out was actually not far off par on a very variable wicket. Tea was again superb: how wonderful to be greeted by another delicious spread in a warm and welcoming clubhouse (with an open bar). Crichton and Hardman briefly looked at home before falling to the stop-start (and up-and-down) pitch; 22-2 was ominous. But Ben Dale picked up on last season's form, looking remarkably untroubled for several overs before getting off the mark with a straight six (question for PV the stato: what percentage of innings get off the mark with a maximum?). Alex Warnes seized the chance of a top-order bat and these two put on 66, before Jr's eyes lit up once too often, just post-drinks, as he considered a maiden fifty. At 100-5 there was a chance of a wobble, but Yogesh smote four huge sixes in ten balls to dispel the doubters. BD's calm 37* was worth twice that. Plenty of advancing years defied, whilst Old Father Time watched on serenely. Wonderful.
