Northiam CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 20 Jul 2025 at 1.30pm
RNVR Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
As seems to be the way this season, despite the sunshine, teams keep cancelling – this time it was the turn of Maori Oxshott, a side usually brimming with kids, who could only muster six. So off it was to the Fixtures Exchange and Facebook. After a bit of horse trading, and despite a rather longer trip than usual, Northiam CC down near Rye was decided upon, owing to their enthusiasm for a game, promise of a decent pub and tea. The trip put a few off, but the RNVR were still able to summon up ten players, albeit the prospect of biblical storms forecast had somewhat dampened spirits.
We arrived at the Rose & Crown, to find a full oppo, extremely relieved to see us, in fact the first arrivals received a standing ovation! They assured us that the pitch would absorb the rain quickly and the weather would brighten up. The captains went for an inspection. The heavy roller had been out and a breeze was helping the pitch to dry. A revised start time of 14:30 and a shortened 35 over match was agreed upon.
Given the distance we’d had to travel the RNVR were offered an arranged toss, however it was obvious on a drying pitch that neither team fancied batting first, so with his new found ‘tails never fails’ confidence, skipper Crichton said it was only fair for us to toss. Heads and inserted, there goes that theory Tex!
The wicket lived up to its ‘lively’ billing – the first bowler bowling three maidens on the bounce, Crichton removed second ball and the RNVR 4-1 after six overs! After eight overs, and with the score having raced to 12, the Northiam captain, Tom decided it was time to open the game up and bring on the Ninian-esque Sandy from the top end. Predictably rather than open the game up, this F&G did for both the experience of Dale and youthful exuberance of Rishi. 31-3 with Tim still plugging away at the other end on 14. With his favourite batting partner at the other end, Hewens, (who’d recovered from midweek COVID tests and been entertaining the fielding side with handstands and splits on the boundary), Tiger came into his own cutting and pulling with vigour. Suddenly the scoreboard started to tick over, an embarrassment could be avoided and a total actually set. A partnership of 102 between these two pushed us up to 133 in the 33rd over before Tim fell C&B for 43. With only eleven balls left, Yogesh had one sighter, before hitting his second ball for the biggest six of the day! Ed had brought momentum back into the innings and some spritely running in the final over took his total to 72 not out and the team’s a respectable 158-4 in our 35 overs.
Tea was provided by the Rose & Crown – and what a tea it was! RNVR had forgotten the earlier rain and distance travelled down to Rye, and tucked in eagerly. After a quick pep talk the RNVR set to the field keen to be sharp on the singles and protect our advantage on a drying wicket.
Davinder and Alex Warnes opened, the latter’s vim and vigour causing the Northiam openers some challenges. It was the RNVR fielders who seemed to encounter more challenges though. As the saying goes ‘catches win matches’. When you drop the opening batsman six times that doesn’t help your cause! Fair play to Alex for plugging away as he was the recipient of the majority of those drops, and he did at least take the other opening batsman. The introduction of Ed Knight and Tex into the attack, finally reaped some wicket rewards as the RNVR remembered how to catch. Tex taking three wickets including an incredible running catch at mid-wicket from Ed Knight to remove their number 3, Harry, for 55. Spin was introduced to try and slow the run rate, and Yogesh took a smart stumping off Ben. Alex returned to the attack in the hopes of a couple of quick wickets, and despite a maiden in his last over, every ball narrowly missing the edge or the top of off, it wasn’t to be. Northiam reached their target with 5.5 overs to spare – perhaps we should’ve taken the offer of the arranged toss and given them the sticky start after all!?!
As though tea wasn’t enough both Northiam, and those from RNVR who didn’t have to dash off, returned to the Rose & Crown for a post-match pint and were treated to a sausage, mac n cheese and baguette supper – all part of the service in Rye apparently. Hopefully we’ll be asked back…
