Valley End CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 28 Jul 2024 at 1pm
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 44 runs

Match report Following on from the disappointment of a cancelled game at Barnes CC thew fixture secretary managed to find a replacement and at the same time maintain a team of volunteers for the volunteers…

Advance comms from the Valley End CC skipper promised a declaration game, a good tea, extensive facilities, spacious and splendid grounds. Which all sounded like the perfect RNVR description of a day out! So it was that we all set off on a genuinely sunny summers Sunday, it was official: summer had begun (it was only July 28th).

Skipper Dale’s job was made both simple and complicated at the same time having won the toss… thermometer reading 28 Celsius it was logical to bat… guests at a hastily arranged last minute fixture suggested it would be polite to take the field… diplomatic training kicked in, a question asked, an ‘are you sure?’ and we were batting.

A 77 over match. 1st innings max 40 overs, any unused or declared overs to be given to the second innings. New ball each innings. Win, Loose or Draw

Ed (Jnr) and Mriksh (Bhanushli Jnr) strode out to open the innings. Cameos from each with both showing what could have been. They saw off a tough opening spell. Ed (Snr) at 3 composed and calm steadied the ship (RNVR ref) after Darsh’s brief walk to and from the wicket. Dale and Snr formed a partnership that moved in proportion to their age and the temperature, steadily but at not great pace… a caught and bowled saw Alex Foulds stride to the crease (having negotiated the scoring iPad nobly prior - although the younger members marched away with that control, much to mine and Foulds’ gratitude)… where were we… Foulds and Snr picked up the pace and when Hewens retired not out on 50 Jim Lewin came in to maintain the momentum. A further bit of swish and swash saw us to 191 and an opportunity to donate an over or was it 2 to the oppo.

The club house, with it’s outlook over two of the three Valley End pitches, saw a generous tea laid out for Foulds (both sides) to tuck into. Sustenance and hydration taken on board we took the field to defend our healthy total. Was it enough, was it too many, how do you get a measure of an unknown oppo… was there a chapter on that in Brearley’s book? There were certainly no pictures so I may have forgotten.

I hadn't mentioned within our side we had the pleasure of lining up with 2 father and son combos, 2 Eds and possibly the 2 eldest current RNVR players. It was the father and son pair of Warnes to open the bowling - delightful.

And then dilemma, they both did what they both do best. Bowled very well. Worryingly well. Look at their figures. Warnes Jnr was a class above, and the way these things go when there’s a genuine threat at one end it’s the other end that reaps the reward… Warnes Snr benefiting much to the feigned (?) frustration of Jnr Warnes.
With the score board reading 'disappointing' for Valley End and frustration from their skipper at a few kamikaze efforts by his top order he (the 3rd Ed of the day) formed a solid partnership with their no7 Ali to get their score and innings back into competitive. Hewens and Buckland were then called upon to close up but in the end and with nice symmetry the Warnes were lined up to have a couple of overs each to capture the remaining wickets, hopefully. Alex took it upon himself to save his farther from extra exertion, snaffling 3 in quick order to deliver the decisive blow to the innings and the game.

As promised in the pre game comms; a declaration game in a fabulous setting, with ample and impressive facilities - including draft Guinness at the bar, a great tea and an opposition that play on Sundays to the mantra of inclusive and and fun was well and truly delivered on.

And onwards to Tour...
