The Jardines @ South Hampstead CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Wed 03 Jul 2024 at 6pm
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 17 runs
Match report
What was meant to be a scorching hot summers evening T20 game vs Jardines another feeder club into RNVR ended up being a something of a liquorice all sorts.
Sun failed appear through out, with a damp morning tempting cancellation in what southern hemisphere colleagues would call as a typical Pommie summers day.
[SHCC] South Hampstead CC groundsmen Roy did well to listen to Jardines call to prepare a diabolical pitch suitable enough to suit their bowlers, to maintain the Jardines home turf reputation that is their FORTRESS.
RNVR Skipper Ben Dale won the toss and elected to bat sent in Gordon Kennedy and Yogesh Bhanushali and went with steady 10 off first over off Robert Paterson (another RNVR player). Matt Armitage skittles Gordon 9, Yogesh 17 and Dougie Porter for a Golden Duck (LBW - of course it was pitched outside leg and never out), much to the amusement of his French summer intern - Paul Emile-Galine [first time to ever play cricket - thanks to Jardines for accommodating his day out] who @ No9 who scored 1 run off 7 balls - so much banter at SHCC but especially at work. Ed [Technique] Hewens accumulated 1&2s before being bowled by Robert Paterson for 11. Rob Eason excelled scoring 35 NO [initially retiring at 30 and then returning back when No 11 was bowled] at No 5 a specialist position normally reserved for Club Capt who is averse to platying T20s - Its just not cricket - is it ! Tim Hardman 0 failed to challenge the scorers whilst Mark Rogers accumulated 18 before charging grenades by Jaggsy and ended up being stumped. Darsh Bhanushali also retired with an impressively quick at 31 NO and the tail failed to wag with MM Reza Maroof being embarrassingly bowled for 7 with another grenade and skipper Dale NO with 9.
In reply, Jardines opened with impressive bat and ex pro Steven Selwood 30 NO and Richard [Dickie also of RNVR] Laurenson who was out for a Golden Duck caught by no other than Rob Eason. Freddie Neden 18, David Clarkson [also played for RNVR] 33 Retired NO and Robert Paterson 10 who ended up in double figures.
There were claims by Jardines that the RNVR Wicket Keeper failed to run out their batsman Jonty who was 70 and struggling to score, but I can categorically state that I smacked the wickets but the bails which were glued failed to drop. Unbelievable scenes at SHCC with Jono Vernon Powell [sadly recovering from hamstring surgery] and Nic Armitage [Matts Dad and a Jardines regular] accosting the Keeper and claiming it was deliberate and very unsportsmanlike behaviour !!! This is not how we play our cricket , we encourage the opposition batsman at all times and applaud their bowlers when they are impressive. Whilst we failed to bowl Jardines out, bowlers were impressive with all except Dougie Porter missing out on wickets albeit from a single over which went for 14, again much to Frenchman and work colleague Paul's amusement. A bad day in and out of the office for Dougie. A superb day had by all with refreshments and pizzas enjoyed till late evening.
