Match report
Day 4 of tour
Potentially tiredest players and potentially our toughest challenge along with the logistical challenge of being oversubscribed... however this did equal a strong side made up of talents from all corners of the RNVR playing squad: Barnes connections, rolling back the years contingent, stalwarts of the club… honorary Sussex crew member. Oldest fixture. Most elegant ground. Arthur’s favourite and final resting place.
A ground, match and company imbued with poignance, and with stories of batting second a the key to any result, the real game begins at 18:00 etc we’re all rather daunting to the first time, and honoured to be, skipper for the day Dale as he walked out to the toss.
Called correctly. Did the advised thing. Put them into bat. 11:30 start gave time enough to have a descent bowl at them before the legendary fish pie, desert + cheese + port lunch.
Unsurprisingly there were numerous/avalanche of requests of ‘happy to bowl either end and at any point… just as long as it’s before lunch. Oh. Okay. Sure. Will do.
Opening spells from V Kumar and A Foulds were great and although wicketless AF was economic and containing. VK reaped some reward in his 3rd and 9th overs. P Coppard joined the attack and snaffled 3 for very few. Buckland stood up to be counted and rolled back the years. Pepler, of course, took a wicket in his first over the detail of which is a blur but he pretty much always comes up with the goods.
Time for lunch arrived. Exciting for all, apart from Dale and Warnes. Dale because he hasn’t got Warnes in to bowl before lunch… oh dear. He was quite clear after all. On the other hand Cuckfield were 103 for 6. Pretty impressive it appeared.
Lunch. Marvellous.
It suddenly became apparent, post lunch, why everyone was so keen to be a ‘before lunch’ bowler. It wasn’t to do with a full stomach, it was the fear of what happened next. Cuckfield came out clearly with the instruction to ‘get on with it’. What followed was a barrage of 4s and 6s. Dale bore the brunt. Buckland fought admirably and I suspect had he been the same age as D Turner - who was taking us apart on the way to a brutal 100 - a spectacle of a different sort would have ensued. As it was a six that threatened to land in the middle of the lunch for the senior members of the respective clubs was then bettered by one that cleared the Pavillion and was well on the way to the sea… a declaration was declared and the leap from 103 for 6 to 248 for 7 was as dramatic as it was brutal.
To begin the reply Cadle and Ford opened up. A steady start ended with 50 on the board when Ford found a Tim Hardanesque way to end his innings: bowled ricocheted from pad/body. It was by an international bowler he can claim.
Cadle had seemed to be set to cash in on a fine batting track until suddenly a couple of balls rattled him and he offered an uncharacteristic chance in the air, on his way for 32, much to his disgust. Maroof and Coppard began to up the pace with a quick 50 partnership. Coppard coming to an unfortunate end via an lbw that drs showed to be… unfortunate. Crichton came to the crease and between them went along at a good rate to add 80+ together. Maroof using the wise technique of getting the ball across the boundary rope regularly and Crichton managing to test Maroof’s stamina with an alternative approach... Maroof departed for 66 and actually apologised! Pepler came and went in dramatic style. 6 and out, the perfect Pepler cameo. Crichton decided that he’d donate his wicket to Bunny again. There’s a witticism in there some where but I’ll leave it to you, dear reader. This brought together Kumar and Dale. The score at 191. Dale only there because T Warnes was insistent that he needed to see a former pupil compete in the Olympics. The 67 needed was ticked off by the pair, mainly by reminding each other what Hewens (he was already back on the A23 having made his tour contribution, but clearly an inspiration) would be doing. Kumar finished on 37 not out for the second year in a row.
A fine chase by the RNVR team and a great conclusion to tour. Undoubtedly a generous declaration by Cuckfield who were, as ever, splendid hosts.
