Match report Mark Pepler Managed two games in Winchester and the Sunday at Oxted.

Dr Tex Warnes has written a moving report of the Friday, and Mark's two chapters have been split to fill the web pages available.....

Two games two sides two outcomes.
This year I arrived on the outskirts of Winchester to find the residence of the Airbnb in slow recovery from the previous nights celebrations.

With one incumbent suggesting his dog drive instead of himself it was clear that the night before had resulted in a hazy morning.

A few sharpeners in the very agreeable Queen Inn put the world on an even keel and after lunch we departed for the beautiful and scenic ground in the walls of Winchester College.

We put them into bat and it was at this point that Vinay smashed through their top order. Three wickets bowled in three overs is a strong start by anyone’s measure.
With Alex Beard unplayable swing resulting in a stunning one handed Paul Coppard catch a few changes were required. What followed was a marvellous spell from Tim Hardman of seven overs for not many. We had a father and son bowling combination from Yogesh and Mriksh, which the son won with a couple of wickets. The new editions to RNVR were great value with Tony Poulter bowling some excellent spin and Elena running all over the college outfield. The college fought, with a number of excellent juniors to 153 from 48 overs. This gave the RNVR a small 24 overs to better the total.

Our innings was going very well until our umpire decided to turn into Jonty Rhodes whilst at square leg. Rather confused as to his exact duties, Poulter went to fielding default and put in a fantastic dive stopping a certain four that Yogesh had smashed. Much to the oppositions glee and our consternation only a single was the result as our confused umpire realised he was a little mixed up.
Round two of the father and son battle resumed and after some initial Yogesh fireworks it was again victory to Bhanushali Jnr to subject father to a rather long car journey home as he had out scored and taken more wickets than Yogesh.

In came Ian Harvey who managed to slap several very long hits around various parts of the Winchester estate, finally winning the game with a huge six into the cloisters, and beyond, capping a rather excellent unbeaten 73. After a few beers with the opposition and a return to the Airbnb for several delicious steaks, clarets, cheeses and cake a most excellent day's cricket was capped.
