Oxted & Limpsfield CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 04 Jun 2023 at 1pm
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 23 runs
Match report
RNVR win toss and bat, declaration game.
RNVR 161 all Out (Bhanushali 90), Oxted 138 all out (Ejje 60, Bhanushali 3-22), RNVR win by 23 runs
With a day's rest, off tour, Skipper Saunders returned with a side skilfully managed - pregame - not to include too many Winchester exhausted tourists, and on the pitch, in one of the most trying games in RNVR recent history.
Only Vacher who had thought Porter was selected as available was a change to the listed 11.
Much that made the game trying was due to officialdom, and the highlights of this included Arun Nayak being removed as a bowler (Two balls bowled by Hardman), two bats reprieved from dismissal for either hitting (LBW) or not hitting (Caught) a ball that resulted in their reinstatement, one bat being dismissed without being given out; a case of a catch to the wicketkeeper (Saunders) which was clearly hit, and relying on the non striker to send him off.
We had a swarm of bees
We had a debutant from Forest Green, selected as a keeper, who opened the bowling and top scored too. (Saunders ultimately kept wicket as he needed to protect an achilles affected by batting - and mainly because his wife would not have appreciated his being inured just before their child is born). Yogesh Bhanushail has a son too, aged 13 who bats and bowls and just missed out on the Middlesex squad......We may have recruited them both!!
Our youth policy blossomed with debuts from Chapman, Gray, and Harding, and as this is Arun's third game (two this week), in addition to Yogesh, but unlike Yogesh, they only made 5 runs. They DID however save at least 40 in the field and Simon's catching was particularly match changing, involving as it did running too. Vacher, it must be added dropped an 'in & out' chance off Potter at 1st slip and a faster ball between him and Saunders (and ultimately under him) off Yogesh. To add to those dropped off Warnes at Winchester the day before and a first set of back to back ducks in thirty years (on consecutive days) we can see stars rising as others fall.
Among the flim-flam we witnessed Potter putting in another wonderful opening spell with Yogesh, James Harding rubbing the rust from his bowling and Pepler fighting to the end.
161 was never enough to defend, by a normally aged RNVR, but with the youth and Saunders' patient skippering, especially and despite being taken aside by the umpire (A panel founder, in 1987) at least 5 times - the last to delay the last twenty overs, mainly at his own causation, we got there. Neil Ejje was out on his feet by the end, last man out, and may have just have gad enough gas to win it were it not for a deep midwicket catch on the hoof by Gray, taking the ball from hand, to head, to left and then finally right hand to rapturous celebration. Ejje was due to play a cup tennis match at 9am the next day. I doubt that was going to be easy.
Much beer and a late evening in the sunshine.
