Match report Winchester College Staff won the toss and batted. Declaration match, sharing 65 overs
Winchester College 228 for 2 declared, 31 overs, Burridge 101*, Gould* 84 rtd. Warnes 7 dropped catches ("Off" not by)
RNVR 185 for 8, 34 Overs, Crichton 88*

As good a day as Charlie had, Tex's was bad. Not from any lack of application, but he had, one recalls, approximately 7 dropped catches off his bowling from the slips and Gully to a fine array of out fielders, he did, much to his chagrin, catch the younger Patterson (see their exploits in removing RNVR legends last year) and despite letting the ball fall to the ground it was decided he had actually had it under control and the catch stood. The final twist was to be caught behind himself to a feathered edge that no one other than he noticed and he walked; Out without an appeal.

When Warnes senior muttered at tea, that "Tea without tea wasn't tea at all" he was taken off by Tex to find some. at this point lesser chaps with that bowling behind them might never have come back - Not so the former Etonian housemaster.

Crichton and Hillman (again) saw out a draw in a chase we were never that close to keeping up with, despite some healthy bludgeoning from the middle order (Beard restored to RNVR side after a successful guest for the college last year) and Charlie continuing to cut with style despite five slips and two gullies in the last over as he chased that elusive ton....it has to be coming. But his knack of getting fifties on every pitch on which we play continues.

Burridge sparkled with use of elegant batting and almost all his fours sent scurrying across the beautiful Meads outfield while Ramesh, who skippered our first visit to St Cross two years ago looked weighed down by the weight of his slimmed down bat, before being snaffled by BV behind the stumps off a sharp Wu. Ramesh joins the elite few to have played against us for more than one club.

Wu, a house mate of B Vacher was a late inclusion, being in Winchester by chance, and Max's debut was startling for it's build up but, aside an early fierce run out attempt, left many more sparkling performances still to come.

Ben Gould in one of his last games before heading to Dulwich next year might almost have played a cameo were it not for the belligerent intent and result. His highest score, 9 years ago, as a 19 year old was 223 off 100 balls, and he would have passed that today if time was on his side. We shall hope he doesn't resurface at S&Mcc in years to come. We are left to find out who will host us if we can get invited back next year.

Many highlights include BV's composed catch of his skipper while fielding as a sub, wearing his WinColl cap, the skipper taking a catch - but over the boundary, and Tex being gracious to take a catch off the skipper's bowling when the reverse had not been true.

Before the game Hillman, Hayward and Vacher had continued the idle touring pastime of fat old men of jumping into the refreshingly cold waters of Compton Lock a few miles out of town.

Beer was enjoyed in the Queen Inn before the weary wandered off, Skipper Crichton taking BV on a recce of other grounds in the are on the way home - bodes well for 2024....!
