A wonderful day, as ever, our third visit to St Cross Symondians.

No one would have imagined that day 1 of the Winchester tour would be a two innings affair, that was completed with plenty of relaxation time, before supper at the Wykeham Arms.

The level of confusion however that kept the tortured Captain thinking every ball was immense. Skipper Saunders not only on phone-red -alert in case he became a father, had been the last to arrive by which time the game's format and toss were revealed to and completed by the tour manager, never afraid of the "bat first, take 10 wickets" school of cricket.

For a time it was possible we were playing 2 T20s, then we were playing a single game with 20 wickets each, then at the tea break it was suggested we restart with the scores level for the second innings (ie back to two games), then the second innings was to be 30 overs each, and the game starting at 5.25pm on the same ground (necessitating an 11.30am start) was on - and they'd never get enough overs batting fourth, and then it wasn't on and we really did need to take 10 wickets.

Poor Mike was so incensed by the poor communication from his opposite number, the actual inventor of Hawkeye, that he felt compelled to bowl and compete for victory in a far more serious manner than perhaps he had intended. All to the RNVR's benefit. His first ball being his first wicket for the club since Ditchling last year, on only the 19th time he has bowled in the 31 times he has played.

Mr Thos Hillman arrived on the pitch for the last 5 balls, and was clearly influential (4,4,1,2,W). His place was taken by the teenage Emma Moore who dismissed both her older brother, and nearly father, in the first innings to uproarious happiness, fielded like a god, and then was cruelly and ironically withdrawn from the match at tea, by her father, to compete elsewhere in the evening. Sour Grapes, either sweet or sour, were absent from the tea fayre. MM of future tours would be well advised to try to select her early.

Poor Jake Good, who memorably earnt the player of the match award in 2022 and received Champagne for his spirit may well have been the first person dismissed for a king pair twice on the same day in the history of RNVR cricket. Hewens also was on a hat trick during the day.

Rob Hayward was back in the city of his schooling after an absence in 2022 and bowled formidably too from the off, strangling Moore senior with his fabled long hop, but on a day of firsts his team contribution bar none was an elegant snaffle on the longest boundary at midwicket of the hugely entertaining Rishi Threendra, by then using a pink ball as the bats had lost most of the others St Cross owned by them. So pink ball cricket - tick.

We bowled 10 overs from one end each in the first innings, and then 15 each from one end in the second, another first - and I suspect we can claim to have actually got close to Skipper Ford's 20 overs in the first hour achievement last year.
