Barcombe CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Tue 02 Aug 2022 at 2.30pm
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report As I sit here in the office at my desk, Northampton vs Surrey live stream on my phone (313 behind Northampton and 26-1 in case anyone is wondering), I sit and allow myself a moment to reflect on 2022’s cricket season. A lot has happened, and arguably my favourite part of the season is the RNVR tour to Sussex, great locations, great oppo’s and even better company. The game of the season for me however is that of Barcombe vs RNVR. There are many highlights to this game, and my highlights reel started at around 13:15 when I arrived at The Anchor to nothing but sarcastic comments and a tongue in cheek welcomes from skipper Crichton. Everyone had been feed and watered, Moose was enjoying the leftovers and eyeing up the Sheep over the other side of the punting river and there was much joy in the air following the RNVR’s second win in two days! What a time to join the tour, surely it’s all downhill from here?

The merry men made their way to Barcombe CC whereby a toss was had… apparently… The merry men of the RNVR went out to bowl and I tootled off to the tennis court end as I usually do, expecting as ever, to be given a lovely new Dukes ball (RNVR kitty is clearly doing very well!). Unsurprisingly enough, a new ball was provided, a Dukes indeed! Umpire Coppard was ready in his fetching umpires coat with a bottle of Budweiser in hand, “PLAY BALL” I almost felt like shouting, but let’s not get too carried away. As ever, I made my way through my 6 overs of “meds” and as ever, fruitless, I couldn’t by a wicket on tour if my life depended on it! There was a couple “unlucky Fouldsy” moments but not too many! Tex as ever, rattling through his overs in under 90 seconds, removed the opener which unfortunately brought in their No.3 bat… safe to say feeding his cut, late cut and ever later cut was not such a good plan by the RNVR as he rather effortlessly made his was to a 101* and upon reaching 101* made his way off the pitch… I turned to Crichton at this point and asked, “have you ever known what its like to be good enough to score a 101 and then walk off the pitch?!” to which I was provided a response of “You know I’ve never scored a ton!” … that told me!

Wickets a piece from Warnes, Bamford, Cadle, Eason and Miskin meant that Barcombe were restricted to a modest total of 232-5 from 36 overs. Chaseable on what was yet another M25 looking deck and an outfield as fast as Tex’s overs. The only thing possible of stopping this chase was PC and Hylt’s trigger fingers having managed approx. 6 bottles of Bud whilst umpiring the first innings. That coupled with the slight issue that Skipper Cadle had asked me to open the batting… Fortunately for me, my nemesis/bromance partner Kane was not present otherwise I could well have crumbled under the pressure of opening! Another outstanding tea was enjoyed and Dr Ford and Mr Foulds made their way out to the middle. What happened next was something I will find hard to write about without being big headed, blowing my own trumpet or just down right showing off.

I ONLY WENT AND SCORED MY FIRST EVER 100! (Sorry Crichton!) Right, now that is out of the way, let’s put this into some perspective. I was dropped first ball by the keeper and was nearly caught second ball by a fielder who politely refused to try to catch the ball. It was not an innings of class / well maneuverer nudged and nurdles but more a bludgeoning. 21 x 4’s (mostly leg side) and 2 x 6’s. Whilst on 99* shaking like the proverbial defecating dog with all the fielders around me, the Barcombe keeper decided now was the time to ask me if I had ever scored a ton before… unhelpful…. The decision was made to just try and hit the thing as hard as I could… thankfully I made it to three figures and as the Barcombe number 3 did, I walked off to raptures of applause and the occasional hug. Kane was there to see my innings reach its crescendo also!

Skipper Cadle batted as well as ever at Barcombe, making a very tidy 58 and CC chipping in with 30* saw the game home for the RNVR to make it 3 wins from 3! PC and Hylts I believe also made it 13 bottles of Bud each whilst umpiring the entire game too! A damn fine stint from those two I must say!

Thanks for reading, and having to live through my waffle yet again, its been a blast! Here’s hoping I get invited back next year!

On to Cuckfield to try and make it the cleanest of clean sweeps!

Notes:
Joined by the President for lunch in The Anchor and tales of Moose breaking into Ford's neighbour's kitchen - so much for the dog-proof garden! Ollie Callf warming up for his century by rowing his family past the onlooking RNVR.
