Match report What could go wrong?
The beautiful setting of Meads, the college second ground, a team all on tour and it always is sunny in Winchester.....
All was set, even as late as lunchtime when Skipper Anthony Dakin joined the squad for a few minutes in the Queen Inn, confirming the covered pitch and the start time were all in order.....for Tex to arrive with the baffling news that there was a wedding marquee on the pitch and the game was off.
Cue hasty chaos and a rearranged pitch at the far reaches of Lords on an astro. 80 overs to be shared, retirement at 50 and Ford (and a little PV - but not much) tea.
Hylton cast off uncertainty and led with aplomb sending the rested Maroof out with Hardman (unrested - Hippo disturbance) to open.

Vinay reversed an LBW with DRS, but Gould later extracted revenge for his polite understanding, his bat was the mightiest on his day off from St Cross CC. Phillips and Alex Horsbrugh Porter (first game for three years, first for the RNVR for well over a decade and the first at WinColl for 30+ years) made hay, Hylts retiring before coming back to reach a commendable total. Warnes and Ford enjoyed the Astro.

Patterson (snr) in footware reminding one of Nick Stevenson's late father was also a Barnes man, having been club Sec in the 2000's and had formed the "Wild Geese " XI in the late 1990s, which endure still. He was joined on a rotation by his young sons, a leggie and the chap to dismiss Ford, and who batted with a grin so wide it barely fitted under his helmet. Ford got revenge though. He's a bowler too, you know.

Skipper Dakin was supported by the bat of Gould and the hidden talent of Theo Hughes. With the latter's performance and the god-like bowling of 5th change Alex Beard (4-9) the MM will assuredly be sacked for gifting away two so able players.
Indeed with Gould's temporary retirement it was possible that Dakin had seen the wisdom of a draw. Both his colleague Tom and Hylts had another, albeit differing, idea, and with judicious bowling calls that Hylts could have got away with it - had it not been for the ferocity of Gould's blade.
