Reigate Pilgrims CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 19 Jun 2022 at 11.30am
RNVR Cricket Club Lost by 1 wicket

Match report RPCC win toss, time game
RNVR 145 all out, (Mitchell 3-20)
RPCC 149 for 9, (Mitchell 48*), Lost by 1 run.

Despite it being politely suggested that Bertie Vacher was the difference between the sides (he kept wicket as a sub for Rob Burnside until Lunch, and even when Rob arrived before lunch Bushe was subbed off!!) it is quite clear that Guy's semi fast bowling was too accurate for the RNVR, and his clean and enthusiastic destruction (mainly of PV) helped Woody and he to a 50 run partnership for the 10th wicket and victory.

In fairness much of positive can be taken by both sides short of outrageous fortune this summer. Rajesh's side winning owed nothing to his dropping further down the order, but the delayed entry kept his guests on their toes, and more to his brave and decisive captaincy; strong field placement and backing his bowlers. All of whom bowled brilliantly. Callum perhaps the most fearsome breaking Massey's box and pausing the game if not we hope the link with future generations in this side of the Massey family.
The RNVR restricted to 145 in an all day game looked horrendously hard work to defend, even on a ground where 170 was a good afternoon total. But - let us never forget, The Pilgrims do give due attention to the serious efforts of food; a marvellous lunch and tea - with plenty of port seemed to eat the overs as effectively as the RNVR were fed.

Indeed; That we'd entered the last hour very decisively and there were few (albeit not too few) overs left meant that Anthony Massey's XI were well led and marshalled. Catches were dropped - of course - Woody first ball, to spoil father's day, perhaps the sharpest and most crucially sad, but the ones that were held were sharp and well taken.

Mostly it was the joy of being at The Red Lion, in sunshine, with a lot of Pilgrim's dropping by to mark what was billed as a memorial game to the late Joel Hoy, that made the atmosphere perfect, played with happy hearts and above all, hope.

Next year is 25 years since the first game.

Mention must be made of Scott Burgess' sensational catch to dismiss Rob Eason. His season of extreme poor form (or playing others into the very heights of brilliance - very nobel) shows no sign of stopping.
