The HAC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sat 21 May 2022 at 12.30pm
RNVR Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
Beware the perils of playing at very smart grounds.....Could the fixture gods have ever shone so kindly on us? Years after giving up on getting a fixture against the HAC the RNVR were approached out of the blue over the winter and invited. Their Saturday side is weaker than their Sunday - and the mid week is another beast. We answered the call with alacrity. Skipper Dale kindly brought his wisdom, patience and persuasiveness to match managing a double header weekend and gave an outing to many over two days. Three spectators were admitted to the ground too, Bertie Miskin, Tim Hardman and Atif Khan. All welcomed and granted a far better view than the crowd assembled from midday for "whiskey live". An event with more laughter than ours.
RNVR 159 all out, Saunders 105
HAC 160 for 3, Leyhal 43, Khurrana 65*, lost by 7 wickets
Umpires: Julian Weather(h)all MBE (Former RAF) & Trevor Hebden
Saunders (50 in 104 minutes/93 balls, 100 in 146 minutes/143 balls....) nearly carried his bat, 9th out, to the penultimate ball of the innings!
He pulled the very few short balls to the boundary , no mean feat as the striped cut grass was as lush as it was luxuriant. The wicket demanded, and got for the first half, well pitched up stump to stump bowling. It was a road. The flattest most beautifully shorn surface a bat could ever hope to see. We all looked on with dread at would we should all be expected to achieve.
And in the other half Francis bowled stump to stump and pitched it up. Only his last over attracting both unneeded and unnecessary attention. Vinay was as hostile and unlucky as ever with catches.
Bad luck or bad execution gently affected the rest of the bowling and the RNVR were lucky to take the game into the last 20 overs.
Sadly; well beaten by an all round better side.
