Match report
Barnes CC vs RNVR CC
or
Charlie Crichton catches a cold during a heatwave
(Novice) Skipper for the day Tim Hardman did the right thing at the toss by losing it and the RNVR were duly asked to field first, which turned out to be a thankless task for opening bowlers Vinay Kumar and Hylton Phillips who were still bowling after the first drinks break was taken after 15 overs. Refreshed, but sadly wicketless, it was time for a change and they were replaced by Anthony Massey and Tex Warnes.
Club Captain Charles Crichton (CCCC) dropped a skier off the unfortunate Tex, but swifty redeemed himself with an acrobatic one-handed catch above his head to take the key wicket of Laurie Cadle for 75 off what was the final ball of Anthony’s spell.
William Buckland making a welcome return replaced Anthony and kept the batsmen honest until Maxim Ayliffe hit one in the air between Mike Saunders and HP; Mike’s call was heard by all at the ground other than Hylton who hared in towards Mike with his eyes glued on the ball but thankfully he sensed Mike at the last minute and was able to abort his attempt with what ended up looking like a low tackle on an airborne full-back…
Ben Dale replaced the hapless Tex at the other end and started on a hat-trick as a hangover from his last game at Rottingdean on Tour, but as is so often the case it was something of an anti-climax. Some lusty hitting took opener Max Bonomin to his well-deserved century but a swipe too far immediately after saw him bowled by the guile of Ed Hewens.
This dismissal precipitated a succession of wickets as the batsmen were bamboozled by the bowling or failed to show it adequate respect. To Tex’s delight, CCCC took another catch off Ben’s bowling and then in successive deliveries Rob Paterson and Vinay took further catches off Ben who had a second opportunity for a hat-trick which almost inevitably ended in the same fashion as the first and then Ed had his own chance after catches from that man CCCC yet again (his third!) and Hylton. Dom Sherry was manfully pushed out of the pavilion to face the hat-trick ball…which was firmly send to the boundary to deny Ed and bring the Barnes innings to a close on 234/8 declared from 44 overs.
Bertie Vacher kept wicket throughout with what is becoming his habitual tidiness.
Tea was taken in the interval and the RNVR batting order determined; Mike and CCCC (trying to contain his nosebleed) opened with circumspection and scratchiness respectively, but soon the runs were flowing at both ends as the bowlers continued to strive for a break though.
The openers brought up their fifties but then CCCC missed a straight one and was replaced by Ed and the chase continued with the scoreboard ticking over, and Mike going down on one knee to launch the ball towards the tennis courts on a couple of occasions. The number of runs required came steadily down and Ed was eventually run out for the second innings in succession for 45. With a handful of runs needed it fell to Ben to hit the winnings runs to complete victory with two and a bit overs to spare with Mike and excellent 120 not out, his third hundred of the season.
Well-earned warm and cold beers were taken in the bar afterwards, where the 75th anniversary jug was finally presented a year late to skipper Alex Foulds and a good game, played in the right spirit was celebrated with our friends at Barnes CC.
