Ditchling CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 31 Jul 2022 at 11.30am
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
Hylts skipper, Paul Coppard keeper, 10 bowlers used.
The North Star Pepler Hensher plate finally won!
And as Dr Ford suppasses even his own match report standard here is that correspondance in full:
An ode to Albert Craig…
Ardent naval men in pure amazement applauded
And in that famous fight of fights,
they trusted Michael Saunders.
Plucky stout-hearted robust chap, courageous manly true
He never seems to care a rap if he’s a task to do.
And Hewens quirky sometimes irksome Ed,
right well you took your part.
You may be difficult in nature Ed,
but you are true at heart.
And rare Ben Dale how he stood right gamely bat in hand;
our demon, Connor Nolan with the ball is good,
his fearful pace is grand,
but despite his grandest protestations,
the ball flew to all parts of our Sussex land.
Hour after hour the excitement grew,
how it would finish nobody knew?
'Shoorely not,
A tie!
A tie!!'
Excitement reign’d in our midst – supreme,
It seem’d to us all like a sort of dream.
Alas, in the end with Saunders exhausted,
the navy took the North Star plate with Vinay glancing boulders.
Should the history of that fightIn future e’er be told
Say that those twenty five runs of Dale’s were worth their weight in gold.
Tell how our champion team
In twilight made their mark,
And term the subject of your theme, ‘The struggle in the recreation park.
’Oh! the journey to Hassocks station,
Oh! the plaudits that rent the skies,
Oh! To picture the grand ovation,
How we ravished Geoffrey’s Pies.
CC joined in our jubilation,
Clustered metaphorically around his match captains,
Whilst the crowds at his Clapham station
Raised a glass in adulation.
Ye need not travel far to seek
The solid joys of Ditchling’s cricket week.
Lovely Downs worth admiring,
matchless cricket,
soul inspiring,
stalwart, hardy men of Sussex all on harmless pleasurement.
Bring a stronger side next year. For that we are hell bent!
