A Captain writes....
I believe an old sitcom had the line - "We're doomed!" It came from a Scot as I recall.
Well, when we had a Thespian north-of-the-border type amongst our ranks in the form of Gordon Kennedy I should have known the writing was on the proverbial wall. It felt like the Scottish play; witches had cursed our catching and also, I'm led to believe, our batting.

Never in the field of village cricket have so many catches been dropped by so many. An industrial nail bar would not have been able to keep up. First Mr Saunders dropped a dolly of Gatting-like proportions. This was followed by an even easier catch, if that's possible, by Reza who even had gloves on! So it continued, long into the afternoon. Alas to say, dear reader, this writer, was culpable as a dive to my left was grassed and my finger was bent in a most unnatural position. This was the final chapter in a woeful fielding performance as they were dismissed for 178.

As I left for hospital the instructions to the replacement skipper HP were very clear and direct......, but redacted, and needs to be translated as please don't lose.

So followed a nervous wait in A and E for the results, watching on the WhatsApp feed....

I can report the results were terrible; wicket after wicket fell. Reza the only ray of light in the dwindling of twilight of tour. He plundered 83 as those around fell.

The finger was a little bent, but was popped back in, with a little time to spare and return to fray. As I approached the ground with news that only one wicket was left, I had visions and dreams of stories told over a fine glass of claret about a captain who returned with an injured digit to pad up and save the day!

Alas we had managed to run ourselves out and as I turned the bend to the ground the field was empty! Unfortunately no stories, of a heroic victory, to impart to one's uninterested grandchildren. This was a Shakespearian tragedy of miss communication, poor timing and an inevitable fate of our impending doom. However, as always, a few ales in the poorly named Victory pub made all things in life feel a little better. With tour completed, I can only reflect that it was; bloody marvellous and can't wait to do it all again! When shall we all meet again, when in summer wind and rain. When the hurley burley done when the battle's lost and won! Alternatively it would appear to be at Lords this coming Saturday!
Take care all and see you soon!
