St Cross Symondians CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 30 May 2021 at 2.30pm
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 146 Runs
Match report
RNVR 221/6 dec. (Crichton C. 90, Phillips 31, Crichton E. 27)
St. Cross Symondians 75 all out (Kumar 4/11, Hillman 4/26)
RNVR won by 18 lengths
KUMAR (KJR) – A merciless performance from the front, with an exceptional turn of foot making things very difficult for his opposition. His early pace and accuracy down the hill meant the race was very quickly over as a contest, with the form in behind to be treated with significant caution.
CRICHTON MAJOR (g1 § KRf) – The veteran performer found himself with a fine chance to land the pot his long career deserves. Looked uneasy in mid-division early, a place or two further back than might usually be expected and seemingly fired up as a result, but once he was allowed to stride on, he rapidly made up ground to take things up with a circuit to run. Coming down the hill he seemed to be travelling well within himself, and turned for home with a double handful, prompting onlookers to hold their breath in anticipation of this old stager finally landing the big one. He pinged the second last, and looked to be drawing away when he stepped at the last and fell heavily; this may take some time to get over.
HILLMAN (w1) – Made extraordinary late headway to turn in a career best performance. Not involved in the early part of the race, he seemed to keep his powder dry until others had cried enough, and promptly made up length after length up the hill for home. Late headway should not be confused with pattern-class promise, but suggestions of a tongue-tie next time may provide the key to further improvement.
PHILLIPS (KJ) – The southern hemisphere raider turned in some eye-catching leaps at the head of affairs, taking to these fences like one enjoying finally being allowed to take an early position up front. Was travelling well and looked certain to be involved in the finish when catching one on the wrong stride when looking to wing it, catching the top and capsizing. Certain to go better, perhaps even when stepped up in class.
FOULDS (lf) – A fine stamp of a horse, this steadfast performer has taken some time to grow into his frame, but again offered a reliable yardstick by which to judge the form. His action appeared rather scratchy in the first half of the race, but asked for his effort up the hill he produced a very fair performance, perhaps explained by the triumph of momentum over exhaustion.
CRICHTON MINOR (P) – Closely related on the dam side to stablemate CRICHTON MAJOR, this imposing specimen again showed significant promise. Taking up his relative’s usual berth towards the front of the chasing pack, he produced some fine jumps to lift the pace in the middle section of the race but was unable to sustain his effort.
PEPLER (fo) – A rare instance of a runner disputing the verdict of the judge, this formerly useful performer was seen in the press room after the race accosting chief correspondent Vacher and insisting his finishing effort be upgraded. Mid-division, failed to catch the eye. **
HARDMAN (S) – More of a hurdler than chaser in physique, this perennial front-runner couldn’t maintain his position at the head of affairs. He took some time to find his stride, and just as he might have been asked to stride on he seemed to see one late and knuckled on landing.
PRIDDLE (L) – Having been granted permission to skip the preliminaries and go straight to post, found himself at the head of affairs early on but struggled to find a rhythm. Remains promising; there will be other days for this potentially high-class performer.
MAROOF (5) – Not sighted in the early part of the race, but turned in a respectable effort in the latter half. One eye-catching piece of agility might have caught the envious eye of his retired stablemate
FORD, spotted grazing on the hill overlooking the home turn.
HAYWARD (§ iF) – Erratic in his youth, the Scottish raider looked short of peak fitness on his belated return. Seemed to resent being denied his usual front-running tactics, and when he was eventually called upon for an effort up the hill he turned in a moody, reluctant performance. May be worth trying in headgear; of limited interest returning to a lower grade in the North.

** (Ed's note): No Judges were in fact disputed. The altercation was with a pompous by-line hack reporter from an out of town rag, and while the race's result is not altered there can be some sympathy for the relative finishing distances in the maiden St Cross stakes. If only this was an isolated event. Unintentional handicapping - nay knobbling - occurred on Monday too. The correspondent was later retired from active duty and was later humanely destroyed.
