‘They serve beer but no food’ said Vacher after I enquired of the hostelry at the Black Boy pub in Winchester. The Black Boy, owned by David Nicholson is also paired with the Black Rat, which does serve food and presumably the Black Mood (which again doesn’t, though gruel is served Mondays only between 12 and 12.15 with definitely NO second helpings).
Needless to say my attempt at a bar picnic failed and we adjourned to James’ veranda – the only time I have been grateful for being thrown out of a pub…..

Powell JV – didn’t make lunch but batted as if just finished five courses. Talked a lot in the snug and probably had too much brandy. Belt driven anecdotes. One star.

Maroof R – loves a pie but rather like the souffle flattered to deceive. Will be better over several more courses and definitely when they have more wine on the list. 2 stars but a possible 3 if someone can find the sommelier.

Dryden M – sumptuous in all respects especially when the club Pomerol came out. Might be better at the Ivy though that’s a vulgar chain now so I’d stick with Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester. Five stars

Upton M – brief and fleeting this fellow needs to perfect his sip and savour by closing his mouth when he catches the ball. No lack of effort but could do with a new sous chef. 1.5 stars.

Ford P – Only got his hands out of his pockets when Bertie asked him to pay the bill. Dreaming of something better in the outfield he needs to find a new career. 0 stars.

Paterson R – this chap definitely knows a good meal when he sees one though often leaves early to eat with others. That may not be such a bad thing though. No rating.

Priddle N – Closed for some time; this chain only serves sausages, which for a vegetarian will only end badly. Serves fine ale though but not when it’s recycled the day after in his mother’s Tupperware. Beer 4 stars, sausages 0.

Pepler M – Ate his sandwich lunch in the car (well, it was Waitrose) then gorged on a selection of pies. Over did it on the South African red and refused the Kimchi. Sent back his G&T. Trip advisor rating -1.

Vacher B – a lot of potential here not least for those with an eye on his kit. Should grow into a fine hostelry as long as he stops going off-piste and ordering midnight pizza. 3 stars

Hayward R – a little nervous on his opening night but got into the run of things once he got through the first serving. Too many ‘neeps and tatties’ on the menu for my liking though. Still, Ninian would enjoy it. Excellent impersonation of a tree during after dinner drinks. Very good at darts. 2 stars

Philips H – gorged on a selection of Billtong. Ordered copious amounts of Pinotage. Drank consistently throughout the meal and only woke up when the keeper stood up to him. Needs some vegetarian options (See Priddle N) on the menu otherwise he’ll get terribly constipated. 2 stars
