Hit or Miss CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 09 May 2021 at 2pm
RNVR Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets with 9 balls remaining.
Match report
RNVR took to the field to take on Hit or Miss, traditionally a late September affair, on a sunny May afternoon. Buoyed by the newly trimmed hedge around the ground that allowed the pub-goers across the road to finally be true spectators to our game, and expecting the traditional late season road, the skipper won the toss and elected to bat (rookie error).
Making a mockery of the low bounce and sideways movement, Tim20 helped himself to a trio of boundaries off the 3rd over. The early confidence came back to haunt us however, as both Tim and Jono proceeded to be run out trying for that elusive quick single.
In stepped Prids to make the pre-game prediction of “he hasn’t picked up a bat since September but will probably still score a 50”, come true, despite testing conditions from a strong HoM attack. Reza and Colin came and went, bowled and caught at long off respectively trying to accelerate the scoring rate. But a strong lower middle order late overs flurry from CCC, Jimmy, and Vinay, helped us to a competitive 192 off 35 overs. (Vinay helping himself to a casual 16 off 3 balls to finish the innings).
As the RNVR came out to field post tea, gladly (for the batsmen), the pitch had dried out and the sun continued to shine, which meant conditions were somewhat easier to bat on. The HoM openers weathered a good opening spell from Vinay and Dav, and then opened up against the change bowlers. All bowled relatively well without reward, as some very tough catching chances went down, but ultimately both openers deserved their 50s. AB finally broke the partnership and bowled a tight spell for his 1-27 off 6. Vinay and Dav’s got one more each in their second spell, but sadly a lack of early wickets hurt us as HoM got home with 9 balls to spare. We took it close, and were never truly out of the game at any point of the innings, but the better side won on the day.
