Leigh CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 18 Apr 2021 at 1.30pm
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets with 13 overs to spare
Match report
After much debate and with Leigh joining a Sunday league, bar the freezing game at Staplefield we almost played back-to-back games (eyes passim 20/09/20). 40 overs a side rather than 35 on this occasion, but with high hopes of an all day match next year.
Skipper Massey lost the toss (shock) and we were invited to field (would have done so anyway) on a green looking deck. Everything was very familiar from the aforementiond previous edition (7 of the same 11) and so same opening bowlers from the same ends seemed like a good idea. Vinay bowled a tight first over and then their opener tired to send Hylts' first delivery into Dorking and was clean bowled. Pinnock I was soon to follow, plumb in front to Vinay and Leigh were not many for 2. However, this didn't precipitate the same sort of collapse as 2020 and Slade and Glaysher took the total to within sight of 100 taking advantage of a rapid outfield, a couple of early season drops and the odd loose delivery before Slade was well caught off a leading edge by Colin at point.
(Homemade) drinks came at 110 for 3 and then we had an infamous "Fordy's big 10 minutes", a further 6 wickets fell in quick succession to Pepler and Colin including a tracer bullet caught at mid off by Massey (hands still hurt) and further catches for Mike and Vinay, meaning Peps finished with figures of 6 for 33 from his alloted 8 overs. A brief flurry of boundaries delayed the inevitable before Vinay returned to pick up the final wicket and dismiss Leigh for 160 off 34.1 overs. Note also to Bertie V for an excellent keeping display including standing up to Peps and disprupting Glaysher when set.
First ball of the chase was dispatched for 4 by Jono, opening with Piers and both moved into the teens before falling in quick succession. CCCC soon followed, feathering behind and suffering from a noseblood with his promotion to 4 and the RNVR were having their traditional wobble at 35 for 3. Mike and Colin righted the ship, playing out the selection of dob and moon balls but pouncing on anything loose in a partnership of 97, including a 38 ball from 50 from Colin before he was bowled for 77. Skipper Massey followed in the same manner shortly afterwards and it was left to Hylts and Mike to finish things off with some lusty blows, 13 overs to spare and a comfortable 5 wicket win to start the season.
As always, grateful to Leigh for their generous hospitality and the excellent atmosphere all day on and off the field, let's hope we can get the all day game in for 2022.
Notes from the resident statistician:
Among many highlights were Mark Pepler's maiden club five-for which is also now the club's best bowling at Leigh.
And another furiously calm innings from Colin Bridges. He and Saunders broke the 4th wicket partnership with 97 in 15 overs previously held by Taylor & Crichton from 2013. Both now hold two wicket records at Leigh. Low lights might have included the over 50s dropping the first two chances of the season.
