ANZAC spirit survives at Eton Agar Plough on ANZAC day 2021 – intense competition with friendly comradeship and rivalry, the way cricket we like to play and should be played.
For the second game of the 2021 season, the weather forecast was bright and sunny day, but quite artic – not bad playing cricket in April and thankfully no sight of BoJo the clown and his vector of Government spin. At least we didn’t encounter the beast from east when the Eton game was duly cancelled. Our club President Bruce, who scored the first innings found it difficult to concentrate, as it was extremely cold. I’m sure a glass of Port or a Scotch would have done the trick.
Due to easing of Lockdown and re-opening of pubs limited to outside seating, match manager (MM) was forced into making an early choice, but the 2019 early front runner - The Cow from Slough was swiftly dispatched for 6 and the Pineapple in Dorney was a perfect choice with a large enclosed backyard and wide range of large sandwiches - thanks to Charlie for recommendation. Most made it to the Pineapple on time, some were delayed by M4 closure and also great to see the enthusiasm from Tom who unusually made it prior to the game starting – MM did entice Tom with allowing him the pleasure and freedom to order a double G & T and what is now a compulsory rendition of his version of Sea Shanty.
The duty match manager initially made selections based naturally on a 11 a-side game (also horrified at the prospect of dropping 4 chaps from the Eton fixture due to significant interest following lockdown), but Home Park CC (Eton College) skipper our very own Tex Warnes suggestion of a 12 a-side match duly brought in latecomers Jonoh and Reza into the frame – what a waste of time with both failing to challenge the scorers – more later. Jonoh, Charlie and Hylts were quite happy to play for Home Park CC, as they were initially 2 short.
Colin was selected by the MM to be the skipper for the day, and duly lost the toss. Home Park CC elected to bat and sent in their openers, Jonoh who initially cut Vinay between slip and gully for 4 and that certainly got him interested and focussed a line outside off with movement and Jonoh duly obliged by hanging out his washing and Colin taking a smart catch in slips to dispatch him back to the pavilion. Opener Sherisa Gumbs was solid defence to start against some very tight bowling by both Vinay and especially Davinder, but eventually once in, unleashed some sumptuous square and cover drives and a couple of pull shots before being trapped LBW by Brian Shipley for 17. Ms Gumbs actually represents Berkshire and quite an orthodox and elegant and correct bat, a pleasure to watch stroke play. A Miles played a stubborn innings with an injury – pulled muscle or hamstring for 41, and skip Colin allowed a runner to continue his innings, and bowled beautifully by a cutter from Robert ending with 5 overs 16 runs and 1 wicket. Hylts came in and but soon went for 1 to a caught and bowled by fellow countryman - South African Brian who finished with 4 overs 14 runs and 2 wickets. This bought our own batsmen Charlie in his usual RNVR spot @ #5 – this man has influence even with the Etonian opposition! Colin duly brought in 2 slips, gully and point given his tendency to square drive and cut, but he did manage to dispatch Robert back over his head and cracking the side screens, and eventually scored 21 before being caught by Mike deep in cow corner off Colin who finished with 4 overs 16 runs and 1 wicket. With tight bowling throughout the innings by all, an impressive debut by Gordon “Little John” Kennedy 5 overs 1 maiden 19 and who along with Davinder 5 overs 1 maiden for 14 runs and Matt ending with 2 overs 11 runs were all unlucky not to grab any wickets. Home Park CC were looking at total of around 130, but some great batting and lusty blows by Cramp 26, Gremier 11 and Hodnett 13 very late in the innings brought the total to 163 off 35 overs. Mike taking some late stick but also ending with 2 wickets for 27 off 3 overs and Vinay coming in for a second spell and taking another quick nick and Reza taking a catch behind the stumps to everyone’s surprise, Vinay finishing with 2 for 27 off 7 overs.
Tex (Thanks very much) kindly laid on hot teas for this very cold afternoon, in addition, generously supplied 2 Magnums of bubbly during the interval.
Mike and Reza opened the batting, and Reza spent no time on the square and retuned back to pavilion trapped plumb LBW by Jackson for nought. Skipper Tex providing guidance on where Jackson on which line to bowl ! This brought on Ed to the crease, who initially took his time playing himself in and then went on to bludgeon his way with some cracking 4s over the top of the inner ring to a well earnt 39 runs before being bowled by Hodnett. Meanwhile, Mike was steadily accreting runs playing himself in usual solid defensive self and looking ominous for a big score before being bowled by Beard for 19. Matt walked confidently to the crease, and started his account with a 4, and then continued to plunder the bowling with some cracking 4s ending on well deserve 54 not out helped ably along by Robert who stroked some lovely off drives before being bowled by Hylts for 31. This brought Tiger Tim to the crease, but by this stage the two crucial partnerships Ed/Matt and Matt/ Robert had done the damage and with 4.3 overs to spare, brought home the bacon. Noteworthy RNVR contributions for Home Park by Tex finishing unusually with no wickets from 3 overs and 25 runs and Hylts 4.3 overs 27 runs and 1 wicket. But the best till last from young Alex Warnes whose very tight bowling was impressive as RNVR batsmen struggled to get on top giving no boundaries, so well done with 3 overs for 12 runs – future is looking bright for RNVR young guns. Another great day out playing cricket with friends, great atmosphere, so thanks Tex for hosting us at Eton College amazing grounds.
