Leigh CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 20 Sep 2020 at 13.00
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 111 runs
Match report
RNVR CC - 210/6 (J Massey 93, Kanna 3-51)
Leigh CC - 99ao (Phillips 3-26)
RNVR win by 111 runs
Leigh has seen some of the best and worst of the RNVR over the last decade and on what should of been the last game of the summer (just turned out to be the last warm game of summer), this year we produced some of the former and very much in the style of the Dear Jonathan episode of 2011 (see: https://rnvr.secure-club.com/scorecard/fixtureID_352299/RNVR-CC-v-Leigh-CC-03-Jul-2011.aspx).
Having agreed a 35 over game and won the toss, MM for the day Massey decided to bat and open. He set about both opening bowlers immediately and there was an opening stand of 58, before Mike was brilliantly caught on the 2nd attempt at short fine leg, followed by partnerships of 30odd with Prids and 62 with Colin (an all Bath Uni top 4) meant the RNVR was set for a big score. Massey was finally dimissed, stumped for 93 (jug avoidance), and was soon followed by both Charlie and Reza, both trying to score quick runs in the final overs. The only one who actually managed to do so was Hylton who took 28 off the final over of the innings with 4 x 4 and 2 x 6 (is this a batting record? I know we've definitely conceded more than 28 in an over before) and the RNVR ended up with 210 for 6 off their 35.
Between innings, in an effort to exorcise the demons of South Nutfield, some actual fielding practice occurred. It seemed to work as Leigh, having being 21-0 after 3 overs, fell to 33-5 with 4 catches (Massey, Hylts x 2 and Mike) and a run out (Mike again) with Vinay and Hylts doing their usual excellent work to open up. Both were replaced after 5 overs each by the spin of Colin and Roland and there was a brief recovery for Leigh to 81-5, before another flurry of wickets - 1 for Colin, 2 for Roland (both caught), 1 for Peps and another run out (stump removing direct hit from Colin) meant Leigh were all out for 99.
All done by 5pm, home in time for Countryfile and talk of returning to an all day game next year, apparently just mind the potatoes at lunch...
