Match report
40 over game - late crisis with St Albans having selected a 20/20 u19 side first to play another fixture, fear that they wouldn't have an Eleven - Fergie stepped up.
Priddle/Vernon-Powell 54 for third wicket, sets new record. As do Hewens and Bridges (46) for the 7th and Hewens with Kumar for the 9th (38). Hewens now holds three records at the ground
Priddle 50 in 49 balls
Hewens 50 in 45 balls
RNVR headed north of London for the annual game against St. Alban’s. After losing the toss and being put in the field, the RNVR started with a tight opening spell from Vinay and Tex to put the early brakes on the St. Alban’s batting. But a steady partnership from their opener and skipper brought the run-rate slowly up. Despite some tight bowling in the middle of the innings, the RNVR sadly went wicketless, allowing their opener to complete a chanceless ton before retiring, and the innings closed on a competitive 202 from 40 overs.
As Prids and Dougy opened up, so did the heavens, exactly two balls after a dropped catch and a dot to start the innings. As the covers were put on, the rain stopped, and so, showing the England team how a rain delay should be handled, the innings resumed a mere 5 minutes later.
Despite some early wickets, Prids was in imperious form, hitting the boundary with regular occurrence, before he got a good nut, clean bowled for 76. Ed Sr carried on the good work, and accompanied by the skipper, Hylts, and then Vinay, edged us closer to the target; the highlight being a sumptuous on drive for 4 that had the crowd on their feet. 29 off 4, became 22 off 3, became 17 off 2, and finally 9 off the final over to win.
St. Alban’s decided against using their gun bowler, and instead their skipper wanted the glory, steaming in from the top end. Vinay creamed one through third man, 2 off 2 needed, and then 1 off 1, Ed Sr to face. A good ball, edged to the keeper, who proceeded to run us out trying to steal the single for the win. A tie (is this the 2nd tie in 2 years?), which seemed a fair result, both teams having felt they had it in the bag… until next year!
