Match report The final day of Tour dawned bright and sunny unlike some of the usual participants whose extracurricular activities saw them sampling some of the 'good stuff' til the wee hours. Despite this, with a hearty breakfast and coffees on board, Maroof, Potter and Phillips managed to get down to the fabled Cuckfield ground well ahead of schedule and even managed a quick net beforehand - must be a first and definitely not something to be emulated regularly.

Paige (formerly Peter) Collins had been replaced as skipper of Cuckfield by Andy Middleton after 37 long years at the helm - quite an extraordinary achievement! On the other side, Hylton Phillips became only the 5th person to captain RNVR at Cuckfield in the same time. Skippers Phillips and Middleton 'engineered' a coin toss which ensured RNVR would bat first and play the usual full-day declaration format. RNVR and CCC decided to play 12 each (Piers to bowl & field, DNB).

The wicket was another excellent batting track and conditions were favourable for high scores. Rez and Laurie kicked it off and after some glorious boundaries, Rez was unfortunately dismissed too early. Laurie went on to make another very comfortable 55 on a track swiftly becoming his own. He was ably backed up by Tim and Ant Liddell. Lunch was taken at 117/3 and, most unfortunately, due to Covid-19, the usual fantastic fish pie was impossible but snacks, drinks and the omni-present port made an appearance and were consumed in the glorious sunshine and good cheer.

Enter the hero of the innings, George Taylor, who raced to his 50 off just 47 deliveries and then to 92 off a further 17 balls - truly a pleasure to watch, crowned off with a sensational straight six! Tex provided superb support - and running - the other end and Taylor was eventually out to the last ball of the innings, their partnership of 119 (Taylor 73/Warnes 35) a new club record 6th wicket partnership (beating A Massey/Vaughan 2009 @ Oxshott). With that, RNVR declared on 259/6, a reasonable target set.

Tim injured his back batting and sub Alex Warnes was drafted in for the fielding session with Phillips and Vacher to open the bowling, backed up very ably by Tex Warnes. Despite the lack of wickets, Piers and Tex were superbly economical on a flat wicket and set the scene for the breakthrough wicket which came from Frano, caught behind. Alex Foulds then joined the party with a sharp stumping by Ant Liddell. Despite this, Longfield and Shepherd both managed to get 50's and the skipper turner to Ford and Taylor to try and coax a wicket from the road.

A mini-breakthrough run out came in somewhat comical fashion when Phillips gingerly put one finger in front of a screaming drive from Shepherd which went on to hit the stumps and catch Goff Baker stranded out of his crease in unlucky circumstances.

Ultimately, it wasn't enough and RNVR were left to rue several dropped catches and some 20-odd runs shy of par as Cuckfield cruised to victory by 7 wickets.

In the process, Sam Shepherd joins Warnes, Ford, and Nott-Bower as players to have played for two clubs against the RNVR (CCC and Rottingdean) and the first to have scored 50s for both.
