SUSSEX TOUR (DAY 3) - Barcombe - nail varnish and golf balls
As if coming off the back of a resounding defeat at the hands of Rottingdean wasn't going to be hard enough, the RNVR in their wisdom decided to swap the regular pre-Barcombe tennis and swimming at the Moons for a brewery tour. Yes you heard right, after trying to drink their own body-weights of beer and wine in the hostelries of Brighton, The Wheatsheaf and at Fordy's, Vache finally turned in at 2:39 dreaming of the kind invitation of the Ditchling President, David Collard to tour his Hairy Dog brewery at 11:30am on Tuesday! The Pilgrims were naturally beside themselves and couldn't get to Wivelsfield fast enough adorned in another of Scotty's fancy dress tour shirts! David and his team did us proud, with an array of best, pale ale, stout (the perfect accompaniment to cheese and biscuits - who knew?) and a veritable smorgasbord of snacks, albeit Vacher seemed more intent on eating frozen hops and Hillman insisted on giving us a rendition of 'God Save the Queen' from the roof of Vacher's tour bus!?!
Given the lack of food at The Royal Oak, and last year's pothole debacle at The Anchor, the pub meet this year was changed to The Rainbow. Vacher was a last minute substitute for Ford, to give him an extra day's recovery from his washing up injury, in order to be on top form for Collins on Wednesday. Scotty came in for Pepler, or should I say, meant to come in for Pepler but got delayed at lunch and then made excuses about having to leave early to get Bushe home, so Scotty became Hillman on one leg! The Barnes contingent was strengthened with the arrivals of Tex, Laurie and Dom Sherry, and James Burke joined us, for his debut RNVR run out, a little uncertain about what he'd walked into!
Barcombe were their usual jovial selves albeit with some notable absentees (Kane apparently couldn't make it owing to his growing belly and Tucker now only seems interested in nail varnish and golf balls!?). Some of the RNVR players appeared to be inspecting the wicket as Charlie Crichton and Paul Coppard went out for the toss. When it was mentioned to Cops that none of them actually knew what they were looking at the response was swift "22 yards of misery"! Aside from a remote control car dumping paraffin on a length in the off season. Paul pointed out the only spot the bowlers should aim for and otherwise claimed it to be a batting paradise! After a 'Heads I lose, tails you win' toss a declaration game was decided upon - twenty from 6:30pm and given the frailty of Monday's batting, Barcombe were inserted.
Foulds and Warnes opened with tight spells - so much so that "Get on with it. It's not a Test Match!" could be heard barracked from the boundary. The exertions of carrying his bat throughout the innings the previous day soon got to Foulds who's calves gave in after four overs. So much for 'my body is a temple', as Cadle correctly pointed out in Foulds' case this particular temple was 'The Large Mahal'!!! Tex got his just rewards the following over having Bowser knicked behind to Piers with the gloves on. Foulds' demise brought Sherry into the attack, who bowled with a great degree vim and vigour pre mid-session drinks that was unfortunate to go unrewarded. After a tight six over opening spell Tex was replaced by Laurie to complete a full Barnes quartet of opening RNVR bowling! Despite Foulds' despair, Cadle's 'Licourice Allsorts' stemmed the Stewart/Beck boundary fest when he trapped Beck LBW and got Staples's finger that Tex was convinced was glued to his pocket, out of said pocket! With the old adage of one brings two, it was time to stop messing around and bring out the big guns - Miskin duly obliged, having Stewart caught by Tex in his first over and clean bowling young Olly Allsobrook in his second! The drama had only just begun though as with Will Marler and Callum Coppard at the wicket determined to endanger the kids in the playground the pressure was on the bowling line up. It was all too much for Cadle who capitulated with a side strain quickly diagnosed by on field Umpire/Dr Ford as a spigelian hernia causing him to don the keeping pads and getting Vacher to complete the remaining five balls of his over. Rather like Tymal Mills Bertie can only be bowled in short three over spells so it was deemed appropriate to compliment Vacher's spin with hois fellow spin twin Alex East. This was all too tempting for the batsmen and the resulting skier looked certain to be East's first RNVR wicket, that was until Sherry decided to adopt the Australian catching technique - on field doctor's prognosis fractured proximal metacarpal, Juju drive him to Haywards Heath to get it pinned! The only bright side from an RNVR point of view is that we had now done for three of Sunday's Barnes opposition! Tex had the thankless task of being brought back into the attack and having his earlier figures ruined but did at least have Will Marler stumped by Laurie, bringing about a generous declaration after 36 overs on 244 for 5.
Post tea, Vacher was boosted up the order to open with the Large Mahal in order to try and bat the former into some form and to stop the latter braying about carrying his bat the previous day! After a solid opening partnership of 37Foulds holed out, bringing Laurie to the crease. Coppard as ever played the game in the spirit that we've become accustomed to, determined to give everyone a bowl. Vacher and Laurie went about their business in an almost unlike RNVR fashion accumulating a partnership of 121 before Laurie holed out to mid-off off the bowling of Bowser for 66. This left a very achievable total of 87 required from ten overs. The demise of Vacher three overs later for a princely 71 made this a little steeper but brought James Burke to the wicket with the Beast of Barcombe (AKA Ed Crichton) still in the hutch. When Charlie Crichton was bowled , Ed came to the wicket needing 53 from 5 which soon became 18 from the last, Ed having his heart set on, and narrowly missing Foulds' car twice. A pulsating end saw us fall 13 runs short, with Burke and Crichton Junior the not out bats on 15 and 26 respectively, or did it? That's certainly what we thought on the day. The scorers had been sitting in two different areas of the ground and Mr Coppard Senior had certainly struggled with bowling changes etc and his card differed somewhat from Easty's. After a post-mortem the following day, where Vacher was scored down from 77 to 71, it appears that we could've been as close as three runs short! Whatever, a fantastic day was had by all and a draw was the right result, Barcombe bowled ten players and the keepers on both sides bowled. Much nail varnish was dispensed with, the golf ball came into play in The Royal Oak before we greeted the new arrivals - Reza and Hylts along with Peps and Frano for a slap up tapas supper in Haywards Heath and returned to The Wheatsheaf with Cuckfield on the horizon!
