RNVR Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket
Match report
St Albans – 187 all out (Wilson 78, Massey 3 for 13, Dee 3 for 28)
RNVR CC – 190 for 9 (Reza 56, Mukhtar 5 for 50)
RNVR win by 1 wicket
The Fergs Derby: the one Sunday of the year where we all troop around the M25/North Circular rather than him. They had a full team, we lost the toss and were invited to field on a dry pitch with a lightning outfield.
Quickly, St Albans were 27 for 3 as Vinay (unrewarded, needs to bowl at the stumps) and Will Dee (rewarded, bowled at the stumps) both delivered excellent opening spells. Will removed an opener, the St Albans skipper (there are two types of leave) and an unfortunate Fergs, triggered by his ‘teammate’ 2nd ball. A brief rally followed until Piers removed the number 5, before a more substantial partnership formed between the remaining opener, East and the wicketkeeper, Wilson. East fell 2 short of his 50, caught at deep midwicket by a tumbling Massey off Ben, but Wilson reached a well-made half century shortly afterwards, batting properly, knocking singles around and dispatching any loose bowling to the fence.
Massey Jr then introduced himself to the attack removing numbers 7 and 8 with consecutive deliveries, before a returning Vinay finally dismissed Wilson for 78 and the number 10 in the same over. A few tail end swipes ensued before Junior picked up his third and St Albans were all out for what appeared to a slightly under-par 187.
In reply, Vach Snr and Reza put on 40 before Piers was bowled in the teens and Prids and Reza put on another 50 before the same fate befell Prids. From about 90 for 1, Prids’ wicket led to a full-on RNVR collapse, as 6 wickets fell for 43 runs, including Reza for a well made 56. Somehow in amongst all the carnage, one of their bowlers had claimed a 5 for bowling the strangest mix of no balls, long hops and full tosses interspersed with absolute jaffers.
Enter Vinay and Will Dee, having done all the hard work and taken half the wickets between them earlier in the day, they were clearly in need of more work and the two batted patiently at first and then more assertively, putting on 55 for the 9th wicket before Will was bowled with the RNVR requiring 2 to win. Vach Jnr saw out the rest of the over, Vinay padded one past the keeper and we had won, in fading light, by 1 wicket. Perfect.
