Chelsea Arts Club v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 30 Jun 2019 at 13.30
RNVR Cricket Club Lost by 18 runs
Match report
The inaugural match against the Chelsea Arts Club was played on the neutral Dulwich Sports Ground, both clubs being wandering sides. Thankfully the one-day heatwave proved to be exactly that and the 34 degree temperatures of Saturday were replaced with a rather more bearable 25 degree afternoon. That said, there appeared a couple of bleary eyes in the RNVR contingent post a day in the sunshine at Lord’s watching Australia v New Zealand. Chelsea had only managed to muster nine men, albeit they appeared to have youth on their side!
A declaration format was agreed on, with 20 overs from 6:30pm and we all looked forward to a long afternoon of cricket. Chelsea won the toss and elected to bat, on what looked a decent enough wicket. The RNVR opened the bowling with Vinay and James Bamford, who promptly took a wicket apiece in each of their opening overs, reducing Chelsea to 4-2. Vinay bowling his usual tight line and length then had Jack, the opposition captain, caught behind by Reza. Post this Chelsea had a bit of a mini revival with some very clean boundary hitting from Johnson including a couple of big sixes, albeit the aerial route suggested wickets weren’t far away. His score was only contained further by some acrobatic boundary fielding by Ed Crichton to prevent further boundaries.
Will Dee was brought on to replace Vinay and bowled a remarkable five over spell either side of the 20 over drinks break. First getting one to nip back into Johnson, who leaving the ball on 49, found it to be hitting top of his off stump! The batsmen looked to demons in the pitch, even Will looked pretty amazed at the amount it cut back. Added to which, the Ram ball obviously hadn’t taken kindly to being whacked for sixes, and was showing its age rather more prematurely than it should’ve done! Whatever the reason, it was an absolute peach of a ball and precipitated a devastating set of overs that produced an ‘all bowled’ five wicket haul!
As Chelsea only had nine it was agreed that the two lowest scorers, the opener and the keeper, Winter, a should bat twice. This was not a decision that Winter relished much as Dee clean bowled him twice for a pair! Together with the wily spin of Hewens from the other end, Will and Ed mopped up the Chelsea innings for 133 in a mere 25.3 overs, meaning that the RNVR would have to bat before tea!
Very few hands went up to open the batting so Charlie Crichton joined Reza at the crease to open the innings. Chelsea opened with their South African, Holloway, a left-armer, bowling big accurate in-duckers and Crabb, who was rather less accurate, and had a penchant for peppering Rez with no balls! With the score accumulating steadily Crichton was done by Holloway’s slower yorker and RNVR found themselves 31-1. This brought Hewens to the crease and RNVR comfortably moved on to 59-1 after 11 overs at tea, seemingly well in control of proceedings.
Post tea, the story changed somewhat. Jack decided to take the keeping gloves from Winter in order that he could throw down some off breaks, and Hewens was quickly adjudged out LBW. The Arts Club’s run scorer Johnson was brought on at the other end and bowled with some zip. With Reza batting with authority from one end, the RNVR suffered another middle order collapse at the other. Dickie, on debut, hit a nice four but other than that, Ed Crichton, Andy Craig, Bertie and Vinay all fell cheaply and RNVR found themselves 96-7 after only 21 overs and the clock at 5:45pm!
Reza decided that, post Vinay’s demise, boundaries were the way forward, however Pepler opting for a quick single, brought about Reza’s controversial run out decision for 51, with it being a moot point whether his bat was grounded. With the RNVR still some 30 runs short some resolute lower order batting was called for. Pepler did free himself up and James Bamford certainly didn’t look in any trouble, however 133 proved to be a bridge too far when Peps was bowled for 15 with score at 115 – 18 runs short. The RNVR’s woeful June batting once again came back to haunt them – Jono and Cosmic, you best get on the physio tables sooner rather than later – your club need you!
