Match report Following a wet week in the UK, the RNVR braved the early morning Sunday showers and stepped out to face Streatham & Marlborough in sunny afternoon conditions on a somewhat damp wicket. Given the match managers' inability to have two working arms, Priddle tossed up, and despite calls for a declaration match, a 40-40 game was agreed upon.

Having decided to bat first, the S&M top order faced a miserly opening set from Vinay and Alex Beard who kept things tight; well backed up by Will Dee, Wood and Dale, to have S&M at 47-4 at the halfway stage. Time to "open the game up" was my advice to the skip.

Famous last words as after a few dropped catches later (less than a "handful" this week) and Sunny, coming in at 6, stroked a fine 61 to bolster the S&M total to 156 off 40. Competitive, but chase-able.

RNVR's openers then faced a testing first spell post tea. Despite my inability to call wides with both arms, many wides were called, but this only served to distract the openers as the skip fell to a straight one. After a few more wickets fell, Crichton (top score of 39) and Vinay set about re-building with some industrious running between the wickets taking the total past 100. When Vinay fell for 31; triggered by RNVRs own umpire caught behind off his pad, it left 29 to win off 6 overs. Easy, I heard you say?

Despite a monstrous straight 6 from Will Dee, a mini England-esque collapse ensued, and the RNVR found themselves 9 down with 15 to win off 3. Up steps the fearless duo of Alex Beard and Bertie Vacher to coolly take the R home with 4 balls to spare. Never in doubt, and in true RNVR fashion, a 1 wicket win in the last over always tastes sweeter.....
