Match report An unedifying conclusion to an otherwise decent game of cricket...

Skipper Tex Warnes was obliged to bat first on winning the toss on a drying wicket, two members of the side being absent at the decisive moment. Our hopes of a timed game were dashed and 40 over a side contest was in prosect.
Things did not immediately improve with Hardman walking having gloved the last ball of the first over behind. 0/1.
Nick Priddle joined Charles Crichton at the wicket and briefly a partnership flourished, however, these two have something of a history of running each other out and so it proved once more, Crichton departing after a run was taken on a mis-field. 21/2.
The runout theme continued, this time Priddle running himself out attempting to take a very sharp single having made 17. 33/3.
The next wicket fell soon after, Ben Dale being caught sharply at gully; a sort of reverse-Dale, if you will. 36/4.
Promoted to the armchair at number five following his heroics in Wiltshire, Tom Hillman appeared to be reliving that innings in his head as he was very slow to respond to Ed Hewens’ call of an eminently runnable single to become the third runout victim of the innings. 36/5.
A somewhat hapless Anthony Massey was the next batsman in, and straight out again, as he edged behind. He was unfortunate in that the keeper dropped him twice before conspiring to somehow trap the second rebound in between his mid-riff and glove. 36/6.
A period of calm ensued as Elena Narozanski came to the wicket and held down one end allowing Ed to take the initiative against some tight bowling. Alas, after a couple of boundaries and much running between the wickets to help double the score, Elena popped a return catch to the S&M skipper. 72/7.
The reassuring sight of Alex Beard striding the crease at number 9 was underlined by RNVR’s highest partnership of the match, 55 runs biffed, caressed and placed until Ed was adjudged leg before, top scoring with 42. 127/8.
Beard was bowled very shortly after, winding up for another sizable heave, having contributed a valuable 27 runs. 127/9.
The final wicket pair of skipper Warnes and the returning Rob Eason saw out the final overs, both ending on 2 not out. 131/9 from 40 overs.
The total felt rather light given the (de)construction of the innings, but rather like the just completed Test Match at Lord’s, one never knows…

After a very passable tea between innings in S&M’s marvellous new pavilion RNVR took to the field to find out.
The wait wasn’t long for the first wicket, Beard producing beautiful delivery to hit the top of off stump. 5/1.
The opening salvoes continued, the batsmen sometimes piercing the field but a strong team effort on this front kept them from getting away and the wickets started to fall at regular intervals.
Massey had one lbw (25/2), then Ed got one through the batsman’s defence (39/3), another lbw this time for Skipper Warnes (43/4), who soon followed with a nice and easy caught and bowled from the disbelieving batsman. 51/5. The Skipper collected his third wicket as his opposite number lunged forward but only managed to make the ball balloon off an edge, Priddle taking the catch in front of the stumps to give Warnes a very well deserved 100th wicket for RNVR. Well done that man! 57/6.
At the drinks break it transpired that S&M had only fielded with ten men and that they would have a player arriving to bat as their number 11…
Belief was well and truly with the RNVR and the focus and intent went up a notch. This was admirably demonstrated by Rob Eason taking a superb catch off Ed very low down in the gully; collapsing forward rather in the manner of an old industrial chimney being demolished. 61/7.
The next wicket was one of those satisfying moments where things align in a certain way to make it all seem so easy; Rob was bowling at this point and the new batsman had drilled a decent enough ball through deep extra-cover at a catchable height for four; Ed was put into position and the batsman obliged by playing the very same shot straight to him! 65/8.
S&M were certainly feeling the pressure of the situation with Rob and Elena keeping things tight. Rob’s five over spell contained a brace of maidens and Elena picked up the next wicket with a super delivery hitting the top of the off stump. 91/9. Game over!
However, the hosts’ ‘super-sub’ came in and the concept of a contest ended there and then with him making 31 runs off 11 balls; clearly NOT a number 11.

So, a moral victory for RNVR then and very possibly another small death for Sunday cricket as we know and cherish it?
