The Royal Welch Fusiliers v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 31 May 2026 at 1.30pm
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report The ever-unpredictable game. After a sleepless night envisaging the RNVR having to wear camo gear plus combat helmets to counter the Army shells, Skipper Warnes arrived at the stunning Tidworth ground with plan A firmly in mind: negotiate a timed game; bowl first; Warnes x2 spell of some 20-ish overs followed by a search for willing volunteers to follow us over the top; try to survive the Fusiliers' opening salvo with the bat and hang on for the draw. Only the first two steps proved true....

A 65-over game, declaration, (max 35 first innings) was indeed agreed, whilst the groundsman spun the sightscreens from black to white (red balls please!) and the toss was recorded for social media (or to check no shenanigans?). Tails-never-fails and we were bowling. So far so good. 16 balls into their innings, however, and the score stood at 13-5, with every chance we would never be invited back in the years ahead. Their best batsman had run at Warnes Jr's first ball before losing his leg stump to the last ball of the over; the second, third and fourth balls of Warnes Sr's second over had hit precisely the same spot on leg stump each time. Clearly the Fusiliers are used to their shells flying straight (and speedily); a slowly swinging one seemed to mesmerise them into submission. Surely never before has a hat-trick been greeted by tumbleweed blowing across the ground and a profuse apology from the bowler. Hence plan B swung into action after three overs, with Dave Clarkson and Nins gleefully piling over the top to join the front lines. Nins rolled back the years with some mesmerising legspin, claiming another scalp; Dave C showed that all-rounder status is very much his with a two-spell aggregate of 4-32. In-between Bertie Miskin also blew away the two-year old cobwebs and bowled a beautiful four over spell; the fifth proved a step too far for his right arm, however, and 4d was called upon in his medical capacity. Enough runs were garnered along the way to have us eating the most incredible lunch/tea knowing that 133 would be a just-stiff-enough challenge to chase, whilst permitting us a return pass for next season.

CC and Tiger Tim donned the helmets and met the opening salvos very much on the front foot; although Tim was caught behind without scoring CC continued to cut (really?) the ball to all parts. The Fusiliers' sharp opener claimed Manas and Alex with two snorters; at 22-3 a wobble was on the cards. But CC cut his way to another excellent fifty (off 38 balls) before retiring, and BD quietly ticked along with the excellent Tom Hillman. As ever, there was a game within the game: could Tom H surpass his highest RNVR score (31*), or even make a maiden fifty? The single to take him past the first target was greeted with wild applause from the pavilion; well batted! Although Tom then fell on his sword, by the time Dave C hit the winning boundary, the (£1.50) beers were well and truly flowing and the second Victoria sponge of the day had made an appearance on the tea table. Utterly splendid all round.
