South Nutfield CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 03 May 2026 at 1.30pm
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 74 runs

Match report Despite multiple stories to the contrary, South Nutfield proved warm, accommodating hosts - especially as their XI obligingly lost to our VIII. A declaration format was generously agreed with three of our players able to bat twice. Messrs Crichton and Bhanushali Sr got the scoreboard to a rollocking start, and then, despite a mid-innings hiccup which saw us at 50-odd for 5, Ed Hewens picked up exactly where he left off last season, namely in fine form with bat. Warnes Jr showed that all the one-to-one winter throw downs had helped in adding about 50 for the sixth wicket, before chipping one back to the off-spinner for a well-made 19. Warnes Sr then prodded singles while Ed flayed the bowling to all parts; two shots in particular (a cover drive for four and a straight six) oozed real class. Our 'final' (seventh) wicket fell on 214, before Nevin bagged the dubious badge of being out twice in the day; Doug P held on to be undefeated second time round. 238-8 off 39 at tea, with Ed H on a superbly crafted 114*. Tea matched the occasion - how nice to see such a spread. With six fielders, our bowling leaked runs up top, but Warnes Jr found his rhythm and Yogesh received some reward for eight hard overs up the hill, clawing it back from 65-0 off 7 to peg them back to 100-4. Alex's spell of 10-2-44-3 contained some incredible deliveries, including a jaffa to dismiss their 'ringer' twelfth man (in as sub for an 11yo) caught behind. Warnes Sr then sensed the right moment to introduce himself to the attack, and - much to the dismay of Jr at fine leg, who barracked non-stop through the spell - proceeded to pick off the next five batsmen in a whirlwind of flashing willow past inswinger after inswinger. To say that Sr's 'Michelle' was largely off the back of Jr's hard work is an understatement. However, captaincy is an art hard learnt.... Doug P picked off their last man and pints were had, in a glorious sunset, having won by some 76 runs. What a season's opener. Imagine what we could do with a full XI?!
