RNVR Cricket Club v Barcombe CC on Tue 05 Aug 2025 at 2.30pm
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 48 runs

Match report Tuesday, day 3, of tour. We wake to see blue skies and the sun out. After a windswept and damp Rottingdean both were a welcome sight. Two all day games in a row also saw the later start a pleasant relief too, although as it turns out it was maybe a little generous to have it at 14:30… the sunset was majestic though and only blinded half the team in the final overs!

With a few last minute amendments to the team sheet and Duncan borrowed from Barcombe CC on th epromise he wouldn’t have to face his son… more on that later… terms of engagement were agreed - 80 over game, 42/38 max split giving all 3 results possible - Tex advised skipper for the day BD that “tails never fails”, the toss was done, Dale rubbished Tex’s theory, lost and RNVR were put into bat.

Opening pair RB and CC represented nearly the largest age gap in partnership that we could have mustered on the day.
Unfortunately CC discovered the other side of the openers lot. The opposite one that saw him triumph with a century earlier in the season. Opening bowlers are there because they are good (or because of a dastardly skippers ‘plan’, more of which later), CC reluctantly had to agree.

YB joined his son. Gave instructions to his son, via the benefit of many more years experience. However he failed to follow those instructions himself and joined CC on the frustrated step.

EH and RB established a brief but more solid partnership. RB frustrated to be out - a good sign - and he will benefit from the experience which will see him grow to the fine bat he is destined to be.

Duncan, our guest, joins EH. Duncan’s one request to not have to face his son came about far too soon and as the spoiler up top suggests, the inevitable happened. They had something to discuss over tea and beers later at least.

BD joins EH and having run him out a couple of weeks ago was a) alive to any calls for quick singles and b) not giving any advice or instruction! A policy that served quite well and solidified the innings a little more. BD departing - but not run out - with the score moving towards respectable. EH and TW solidified further with TW adding further chunk to his batting stats for tour. AW then joined EH - is anyone noticing that there a common thread here - and ticked the total along another healthy notch or two.

At some point in the confusion of a parried-over-the-rope six, a lost ball, some frantic sums and an unfortunate ball in the face fielding incident* EH completed a chance-less, elegant and throughly well deserved century. Round of applause richly deserved. There was barely time for TH to add to the partnership-with-EH-column. A 230 total reached.

Tea was taken in the sun. Then it was time for the nail varnish competition to begin.

Those that know, know that 230 can be passed by the Barcombe brigade in short shrift. So skipper Dale set forth with his plan. TH to open the bowling. So nearly a master stroke. First nail varnish allocated. YB denying TH a most memorable opening spell - it was only ever going to be one!

DR up hill and into the wind. After a mixed beginning a successful spell concluded with 3 for and just the one nail varnish allocation. AW the nail varnish victim - there were mitigating circumstances but we don’t take those into account - delivered an opening (technically a first change) spell that had the batters in a quandary, genuinely. Just a 2 for was a very good result and if we went on what was deserved it should have been a 5 for. Of course the rules being what they are others, Warnes Snr, WB, BD stepped up and snaffled a couple of AWs ‘deserved’ wickets!

In the absence of Barcombe skipper Harry who was temporarily absent having his nose/mouth/teeth checked out** Callum Coppard stepped up to assume responsibility to take our bowling to the cleaners a task which he began with relish. Unfortunately for both him and us there appeared to have been a glitch in the matrix that found a caught behind being mistakenly given - nobly and with humility accepted by Coppard junior.

In here somewhere, AW executed a professional level run out and RB collect a nail varish - again with mitigating circumstances, much like AWs only those under 20 would even have been able to have been in position to apply for varnish.

EH had an over or two but then BD remembered he’d already contributed rather a lot already. RB had a spell. It was good but this is Barcombe and when their skipper Harry, who'd returned from a positive check, came out with a point to prove 21, (21!), off one Buckland over, it was polite to give him a break. Offering himself up for sacrifice BD somehow, and rather fortunately, managed to stem the tide and the cannonball express was back in the pavilion. All of a sudden and amazingly the Barcombe innings came to a prompt conclusion as the sun set.

Wonderful day. And an actual win that almost surpassed the pleasure of the bowls win from 2003… (date check Ed pls)

* Harry had rather heroically dived for a ball to prevent a fierce drive from crossing the boundary. He achieved the ambition of the dive but just not in the way intended. A late kick off the turf meant a collision between the fast moving hard ball and the equally fast moving but rather softer impact area of the mouth/nose area of Harry's face. A nervous few minutes followed but thankfully he was able to rest up with some ice and some professional analysis from a Barcombe first responder who wasn’t in the fire brigade but medical type.
** Following the advice to seek a check up at the nearest medical facility Harry was able and keen to resume batting duties which he did, dramatically. I am also happy to report that after subsequent checks, no stitches required and a dentist x-ray showing no major damage all mean that whilst sore a hopefully speedy recovery is on the cards.
