RNVR Cricket Club v Rottingdean CC on Mon 04 Aug 2025 at 11am
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
Three (rather deaf) old men sitting on a park bench:
“It’s windy today.”
“No it’s not, it’s Thursday.”
“So am I, let’s have a pint.”
So we arrived, some slightly piqued from snatching defeat from the jaws of victory at Ditchling, at the beautiful Rottingdean bowl with a ‘bit of a hooley’ blowing. Tails never fails led to us bowling first; 100 over dec game with max 52 first up. The first skier of the day went over Warnes Sr’s head and kept going downwind to the point where he earnt a painted tour nail for a refusal; it was only when Matt Barker, a cricketer of class rarely seen in such climes, called the second skier, off his own bowling, but didn’t even get a finger to it, that everyone realised catches weren’t going to win this match. Indeed, for the purposes of the tour nail paint, Ben Dale helpfully redefined a ‘drop’ as anything within a three-yard radius of the unfortunate fielder. Six nails resulted: two for CC in the space of a couple of overs; two for Warnes Sr (one off Warnes Jr); one for Warnes Jr (yes, off dad). Somewhere amongst the chaos we bowled 52 overs in three hours; Alex W picked up a deserved four-for (ignoring instructions NOT to take wickets lest we released the Kiwi pro); Rottingdean declared on 200-ish. A late lunch was simply marvellous, and the free-flowing port helped ease the cold of the post-lunch drizzle, which set in amongst the tumble of RNVR wickets. PC and Matt Barker, carefully positioned as Finishers, found themselves together at 80-6 but duly came up trumps: elegant fifties for both seeing us home as the drizzle blew across the bowl in sheets. Fish supper at the Regency never tasted so good.
