Match report The annual pram race meant that health and safety ruled that we were to play once again at the Grub Street ground as opposed to Master Park. The new pavilion will have to wait for another year. Post Saturday’s scorcher there was some pressure on skipper Crichton to win the toss for once. Taking the Tex Warnes, “Tails never fails” advice the first part of the plan was executed and RNVR opted to bat.

A young Oxted side owing to the lack of an U16 fixture, went about their business with urgency and vigour. The unfortunate Hardman was removed in the first over, leaving Crichton at the crease to be joined by Coppard. The speedy outfield meant that once the field was pierced, boundaries proved plentiful and the score raced to 64 in the first ten overs of our 38/42 over declaration match. The Oxted overseas removed Crichton, with Coppard following three overs later. The run rate slowed a little but Dale successfully steadied the innings. As ever with the RNVR, a collapse is never far away, and in a five over spell four quick wickets fell taking the score to 127-7 in 26 overs. Warnes Senior came to Dale’s aid and together they put on a useful stand of 37. With a team full of bowling, a declaration came at 40 overs with Dale 68 not out and the side just shy of the 200 mark on 192-8.

Oxted went about their reply in a steady manner, the openers putting on 41 against some tight and economical bowling from Foulds and Potter. The change of bowling to the father and son Warnes pairing brought about the wickets. First Hardman taking a catch off Alex and then Tex clearing up the other opener and number four clean bowled. A third Alex was bought on from the top end – the newly honoured Sir Alex Beard, who was joined by another knight – Ed Knight from the bottom end. Wickets fell at regular intervals, Dale’s bucket hands reliable as ever in the gully, and rest clean bowled to put RNVR in the ascendancy with Oxted 89-7 after 27 overs. The keen observers had noticed that the first team spinner and overseas, who’d scored a century the day before, were yet to have made an appearance and were potential gamechangers. The first team spinner and his young leg-spin apprentice put on 69 for the eighth wicket, leaving Oxted on 156 in the 36th over before Warnes Junior brought back to replace Dale removed the young leggie. This brought the overseas to the crease, who thankfully wasn’t able to repeat his previous day’s heroics falling to a sharp catch at deep mid-off by the skipper. Warnes Junior completed his four-wicket haul having the first team bowled chopping off.

A great game, contributions from all – special note should go to Bertie Vacher’s tidy keeping reducing our extras to a quarter of the oppo’s, with a comical, catch, drop, catch, drop episode thrown in for good measure! Onwards to Headley next week off the back of three victories…
