Match was Drawn 12 aside
Match report
12 a side Ben Dale batted at 3, (bowled T Godfrey 0), Derren Bettsworth DNB for Rottingdean in a 43/37 over declaration match
T&Cs. Always read the small print. And, in cricket, know your playing regulations. So it was in the glorious Rottingdean Bowl on Monday. As the cloud cleared and the windmill watched over proceedings, the playing regs were carefully negotiated over the coin toss: 90 overs in the day, declaration, with first innings max 43; 12 a side, but max eleven fielders on the ground; both sides able call upon their twelfth batter should the need arise. RNVR chose to bowl first, but with last year’s five-star Dav bowling a tidy nine overs for no reward, and Rob not-so-wayward Hayward six fruitless overs from the amphitheatre end, Rottingdean enjoyed drinks on 79-0 off 16. Cue James Bamford to take three wickets in an over, including back-to-back c&b; 3-34 from eight was his fine return. Wickets and runs continued to ebb and flow like the tide on the nearby shore…. Until who should emerge from that ocean (this time sans life guards) but Tom Hillman himself. The Rottingdean number 3 walked past a Hillmanator grenade to become st. Clarkson, b. Hillman, 51. Indeed, RNVR’s answer to Plato should have had a second victim but for Bridges collecting the first of his three tour red fingernails (OK, I’m typing this using my two) out at deep midwicket. Andy Craig chipped in with a wicket in his first game for two years, and tea was taken at 234-8 off 42. Reza continued his awesome run of form with 56 until gravity beat him with a pea-shooter; Colin defied gravity with two sixes, en route to 58, which exited stage left from the vast Rottingdean Bowl; even Charlie C tested whether g might have been a bit less than 9.81m/s2 for a few seconds when he smote a six (alright, top edged a pull) in his 31. But the youthful Rottingdean attack probed and prodded their way to have us apparently KO at 198-10 off 34. Except, read the T&Cs – and who should enter the stage but Thomas Hillman, exercising the twelfth batter option. With off drive of the day, then a pull behind square, he took us into the final over at 206-10. Rob H at the other end tried to counter Tom’s philosophical position that ‘it was still on’, but we all know that Tom doesn’t deal in mathematical certainties…. And Ben Dale’s regular award thereafter of no balls and wides merely confounded the situation. Despite the trap cunningly being laid at deep square leg, ten runs were still made, the last ball was safely negotiated (twice, thanks to yet another BD wide) and the draw was secured at 216-10. Yes, for 10. Read the T&Cs.
