RNVR Cricket Club Won by 25 runs

Match report Est il habile? Est il heureux?

It’s 2024 and the Paris Olympics. Anything is possible, right? Femke Bol running down the American Kaylyn Brown. Tom Pidcock, punctured and out sweeping past a broken Victor Koretzky, or glassy eyed Fijians, chasing the ghost of Antoine Dupont around the Stade de France. But Doug Porter? 112, 3 wickets and a direct hit?

Comment ca se passe?

The fact of the matter is Ditchling, chasing 260, were 120-1 off 10 overs after one of the most sublime knocks by Chris Saville, and then 230-3 with 20 overs still remaining and a Scottish international at the crease with a one day 50 to his name. Jimmy Earwicker, all resplendent in his blue UN helmet, had been launching balls into the giant Ash at cow corner and the tree had been throwing them back at Ben Dale, like an angry Ent, woken from a long sleep.

La fin est surement proche?

But Monsieur Porter had other ideas. The Celtic wunderkid was caught off the back of the bat at slip. Leadsom was then bowled by a beauty. Two direct run-outs ensued. Earwicker was retired and then brought back at the death by his skipper only to have to start again and then bowled at the death by a Warnes senior slower ball masterclass.

Le cricket est un jeu amusant.

I have rarely felt so utterly outplayed. So ‘depareille’. But ask Kaylyn Brown, or Victor Koretsky and especially Fijian Jerry Tuwai. In the end, despite how far out in front you might think you are, you don’t win, until you win.

La grosse dame chante.

I didn’t bat. I didn’t bowl. I kept like an old man. But when Setterfield wanted to remove Earwicker to give the rest of the batting lineup a game I said nothing. And that, mes amis, is the art of war…
