Streatham & Marlborough CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 09 Jun 2024 at 1.30pm
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
On what passed as a decent early June day in the Spring of 2024, RNVR took to the field against Streatham and Marlborough.
Vinay and Ed Stapleton started us off against S&M's first eleven opening bowler Sami; it turns out he can bat too. Quick to punish any shortcomings to length or width, the scoreboard rapidly advanced. Ed slowly found his rhythm and when he did he also found the edge, David Clarkson taking two catches behind the stumps. A change of bowling with the introduction of Nick Priddle and of pace-off from Ed Hewens, brought a period of calm with many edges beaten but also balls falling just short of fielders and then a few catches went down and the score advanced with a strong partnership.
After a brief flirtation with the magic-wicket conjurer Mark Pepler failed to do the trick, Ben Dale and Tex Warnes were brought on and the complexion of the game changed almost immediately. Tex; a man of numbers; decided to take the fielders out of the equation and broke the partnership; in fact he took two wickets in consecutive deliveries and it didn't end there. Ben bowled with great control and induced the S&M skipper to provide a skier which was gratefully taken by his opposite number and then Tex rapidly picked up another brace, this time a caught behind and an lbw. Sami had advanced to a belligerent century but his partners were not providing the support he deserved and S&M's friendly Afghan kindly retired out on 119. With the end of the fortieth over in sight, Tex picked up another wicket bowled, for yet another well deserved five-for and S&M ended somewhat tamely on 196/8.
Skipper Hardman and Pridds started the chase and Nick soon had his senior partner lagging from the quick singles and ones made into twos. After a brace of boundaries and having seen off the opening bowlers, Hardman ticked yet another box in the great cricketing book of odd dismissals when trying to cut behind square and found he had gone back and across rather too much, so much so to have removed the off bail with the toe of his bat! Ed Stapleton joined Nick and the pair built a handy and very correct looking partnership to keep RNVR in touch with the required rate. After some lovely boundaries, however, Ed departed bowled and Vinay replaced him.
Alas, Vinay had only a brief stay at what has previously been a happy hunting ground by skying an easy chance taken by the keeper. In came Club Captain Charles Cricket (CCCC) at his customary position at five and soon the square cuts were flowing, and very occasionally at non-square cuttable balls. At this point the bowling was at times rather wayward and the batsmen gleefully took advantage and after a couple of very handy overs the result was not in much doubt. At this precise moment, CCCC found an interesting (but not quite as interesting as that of the Skipper) way to get out by playing the ball onto the stumps via his thigh pad. A man with a very healthy hangover arrived in the form of Bertie Vacher and he held up an end while Nick completed his very well deserved century. With barely a handful of runs required, Bertie threw his hands through the ball with gusto and it raced to through extra cover the boundary, but sadly had to depart shortly after with just one run required.
If ever there was a man for whom this situation was created it is Mark Pepler; a mighty wind up was followed by fresh air as no connection was made and this was repeated the very next ball, the last of the 37th over. So, it was left to Nick finish it off where he started with a very quick single pushed to mid-off.
Nick batted superbly well, reading the match situation perfectly and paced his effort to reach 100 right at the death, running has partners ragged. Well batted that man!
Match notes: a 40 over game, Skipper Hardman lost the toss but won his first game as Captain.
