South Nutfield CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 10 Sep 2023 at 1pm
RNVR Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets
Match report
A scorching late summer day resulted in a scorching win for South Nutfield team. To be precise their No3 bat took us apart, much to the frustration of the normally unflustrable Davinder.
The day began with the best thing Dale did all day by winning the toss - he suspects the team would have re-packed and headed off home had he not. It was 30 degrees and batting was uncomfortable in that heat so fielding was almost unimaginable! The positives from our innings were: a glimpse of proper technique from debutant Hodgkinson. A father and son cameo from Y and M Bahanushali - lovely to see. Debutant Arnold striking three 4s neatly and confidently. Alex Beard wielding his new willow - it sounded very good. Dale actually ran for the first time in 6 weeks and no one had to call an ambulance - phew! And of course the seasons saviour, Vinay Kumar hauling us to a total that gave us something to work with.
Skipper Dale had asked of the oppo if the six hitting competition was over and was glad to report it had been settled the previous weekend. On the flip side nobody communicated as much to their debutant No3 Charan... After a promising first 6 overs that hinted at promise for RNVR Charan came to the crease, devoured some of Beard's afternoon fun, gave Kumar a few rarely seen whacks and exercised a 'helicopter' shot to a Yogesh yorker, out of the ground for a quick fire 100! All the while Davinder patiently toiled away so, so nearly prising out the tornado that was tearing us apart. Charan retired and suddenly the game appeared a little more 'normal'. Along with his stylish but brief batting, Hodgkinson debuted some elegant bowling which included the sole maiden of the innings.
In the end the difference was clear. We probably needed 100 more and they needed 100 less! All said it was a fine day playing cricket mid-September in the countryside and in 30 degrees heat at a long standing - 50+ years - fixture. Next year I'll ask, have you finished your six hitting competition and does everyone know...
