Cuckfield CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Wed 09 Aug 2023 at 11.30pm
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report Day 4 of tour brought with it the 75th anniversary match against Cuckfield. A negotiated toss meant that Cuckfield were put into bat having been assured of the RNVR’s unreliable batting to date on tour. A repeat of the 61 all out at Rottingdean would not have gone down well in an all-day game!

Buckland and Foulds tight spell unchanged pre-drinks – Simon Longfield caught smartly at first slip by Reza – proper cricket!

Potter bowled a short spell to remove Will Rogers with a very sharp catch by Tex at extra, who then tied up an end coming up the hill with Hayward bowling down the hill. Ed Hewens came on for an over before lunch and took four balls to remove the opening bat, who until such time had looked set.

Lunch was the usual fish pie, portfest.

Post lunch Cuckfield got their heads down. Davinder bowled well up the hill, with Tex taking his second startling catch right on the boundary at midwicket as Cuckfield starting to tee off. Buckland returned at the top end before Cuckfield offered a generous declaration 47 overs in, on 242.

The opening stand between Reza, outscoring Laurie two to one, threatened to make the negotiated toss look like a calculated RNVR ploy. Reza was eventually bowled in 28th over, for 87, with RNVR on 155.

155-1, quickly became 189-4, with Cadle still there on 75, however when he was caught out just shy of his century on 95 with RNVR still requiring 37 the tension began to mount. With Sam Shepherd pulled up lame, Cuckfield had resorted to an almost exclusive spin attack, never good for the RNVR. Another two wickets fell with just four runs being added to the tally, leaving Dav and Foulds at the wicket to try and bring us home with Frano and “blind Buckland” still in the hutch. By this stage, Cuckfield's skipper, George, was beginning to realise that the fabled RNVR batting frailty at the toss had been anything but a ploy, and was in fact, being played out before his eyes!

Thankfully, Alex and Dav managed to steer us home and record the only win on tour. Sunset beers and a failed Tom golf ball brought tour to a close. Special thanks must go to Paul Coppard, for rather as in Rottingdean valiantly came along to support and scored with aplomb, and to Nick Stevenson for avoiding any run out howlers a la 2022! ‘til next time…
