Match report

Derren Bettsworth not listed for Rottingdean CC
For all the ups and downs of la vie quotidienne, there is something very special about the RNVR’s yearly trip round, through and over the various parts of the South Downs. Granted the fields were more green than golden this year (more evidence it does rain in Sussex it would appear) but the ups and downs of the road, the blue hues of the big sky and the sparkling sea, the view out to the windmill, the ozone-rich wind and a bowl to distort the cricketer’s usual perspective – for this correspondent there is no finer Monday morning in the whole of the calendar.
While the 2023 vintage was more reluctant than previous to dip into the Channel, the desire for a good lunch, a healthy pint (or unhealthy pint polluted by golf ball) and a fine game of cricket remained strong.
Such is the strength of support, a game of 12-a-side was agreed, a declaration game of 80 overs and no more than 42 overs for Rottingdean to post a score – just the way we like it. Proper cricket.
With this backdrop, it was perhaps fitting that the RNVR star of the show had a day he should never forget. A graceful run-up, smooth bowling action and a startling ability to move the ball this way and that delivered the most fitting reward. The first and fifth wickets were balls of absolute beauty, arcing, pitching, moving, hitting the top of off. It was, in 18 years of playing for this great side, one of my most enjoyable spells of play. 5-15 off nine overs – Davinder, it was simply wonderful and a pleasure to be part of.
After such joy, what happened afterwards was always going to sink into the background – credit to Pepler for three wickets either side of the barn door being opened and closed, to Tim for more bravery in the field and with bat as he stoically put the top order to shame with resolute defence, to Rob H, James and Tom H for adding jeopardy to the closing overs showing the top order the benefit of a straight bat.
For those that care about such trivial matters such as winners, losers and scores, Rottingdean reduced the RNVR to 18-6 before winning by 74 runs defending 135. The Whatsapp troll (pls check – should this be troll or gassy goblin – Ed) was right – it was 35 too many. But who will remember that in the years to come?
It will be that ride over the downs, the view to the windmill and sparkling sea, the ceaseless laughter over another pint of Harvey’s, Davinder’s uprooting the helpless batsman’s off stump for the second time and the sheer delight of everyone present. This is what we play the game for.
