Ditchling CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 06 Aug 2023 at 11.30pm
RNVR Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets
Match report
* 12 a side: Alex Beard not listed 5-0-38-0
The sun shone to mark the start of the tour in style, though not nearly as brightly as Paul Coppard’s bucket hat which stole the show.
The RNVR batted first with the toss a formality (as per at Ditchling). Reza and Eason opened the batting facing some good Ditchling bowling with their Aussie overseas, Rilo, scampering down the hill bowling Reza with a beauty early on. Matty Barker came in at 3 and built a strong second wicket partnership with Eason, who traversed all of six balls from Rilo. Wickets started to fall before lunch (notably skipper Porter was run out backing up by his home club) before the ship was steading by CC and Harv.
Lunch was as excellent as ever backed up by the usual cheese and port combo. The introduction of a new “Ditchling doo-doo” concoction by the opposition skipper was hopefully a one off!
After lunch the RNVR accelerated with both CC and Harv reaching impressive fifties. Harv in particular, took a liking to Ditchling’s post lunch bowling whacking a total of twelve boundaries across his innings. The RNVR ended up declaring on a very respectable 218.
Tex and Franno opened the bowling tightly against a strong opening partnership including ex-RNVRer Rory Leadsom. Despite the metronomic accuracy of the opening bowlers the partnership refused to break. Matty Barker was brought on down the hill bowling sharply and accurately – a combination most Sunday cricketers are not used to – and started to cause problems for the opposition.
With wickets falling the WASP was around the 50/50 mark. However, Rory batted admirably for the opposition eventually bringing up his ton and retiring with the RNVR’s loss all but secured.
After Charlie’s favourite activity of the painting of the nails, Ditchling laid on a BBQ spread accompanied by many jugs of Harveys. The RNVR left full and well hydrated looking forward to much of the same next year!
