RNVR win by 42 runs

RNVR won the toss and elected to bat on a dry and dusty pitch and started well with Doug and CCCC putting on 29 for the first wicket against some tight opening bowling before CC yorked himself and was replaced by Ed Stapleton who also looked solid before being dismissed for 16. The 'power middle order' didn't quite come to plan as Massey Jr, Yogesh and Naylor were all dismissed for single figure scores before Doug was also bowled the delivery after going to a well-made 50. At this stage RNVR had fallen to 91 for 6 with over half their allotted 40 overs remaining. Useful lower-order contributions came from Simon Gray, Jim Lewin and Vinay but wickets continued to fall and the RNVR were all out in 28th over for a seemingly sub-par score of 148.

An early tea therefore followed and despite the thunderstorms rumbling nearby, we restarted on time with Vinay on for his customary first over and Alex Mumford also taking the new ball, 11 years on from his previous RNVR appearance. The Streatham opener was clearly keen to get home in time for Countryfile and flayed 20 off the opening 2 overs (including losing the new ball to CCCC's chagrin) before Vinay and Alex found their length and the wickets started to tumble. The other opener aimed an injudicious swipe at Vinay and was bowled before Mumford had the no 3 caught behind and the no 4, out first ball, well caught by Stapleton at mid on. No 5 followed soon after, bowled by Mumford, and Streatham and Marlborough were 39-4 after 10. The all important wicket was the other opener and after another couple of lofty straight drives, he was dismissed, stumped by a quick piece of work from Yogesh off Mumford for 43 and they were 50-5.

A double bowling change brought on Massey Jr and Mitchell as spin twins, both bowled well keeping the Streatham batsmen in check and a further 3 wickets fell, two of them bowled and another catch for Simon Gray, after his heroics at Oxted, taking the score to 85 for 8 off 22. It was then left to Streatham's remaining 1st XI player to try to marshall the tail and get his team over the line. He plundered 23 runs, taking their total over 100 but a simple catch to Massey at mid wicket and a plumb LBW, both off the bowling of Lewin, meant Streatham were all out for 106.
