Match report
Day one of only 2 dates in Winchester this year over a three day Jubilee weekend.
St Cross played host for the second time.
On mature reflection MM Vacher ought to have realised the subtle difference in the correspondence pre-match between "youth" and "kids". It's likely a talent thing as the St Cross side may well have had a modal age of 16, if not an average one, and played the game with the most high spirited joyful enthusiasm this correspondent can ever recall, largely as Umpire.
It was a joy, and the result, rather tamely - a draw - was anything but, with fielders crowding the bat as the RNVR last wicket appeared to hold on for 13 overs. Definitely more luck than judgement as one of them was hopelessly trying to actually hit the ball to distant parts. At least the classic stoicism of no10 saved the day. The youthful St Cross were brimful of cartwheels, sliding stops, joyful banter and helpless high spirits.
Dr Paul Ford (see matches passim) captained (see fewer blogs passim) with alacrity and set a noted and welcome tone in having 20 overs bowled in the first hour. St Cross manfully forwent a drinks break to maintain an even over rate across the match.
Mr Barrett, with earned luck played a masterful innings, paced perfectly, watchful for a very long time and then explosive.
Josh Good, son of a WinColl housemaster (possibly) captained his side with equal brilliance and worthily earnt the man of the match Champagne, the last bottle from the RNVR 75th dinner, presented by the Master of the Salters' Company, Ms Timandra Nichols, present to both receive the grateful thanks of the RNVR for the dinner venue and to support her son, the Umpire (and supremo of a 300 strong youth academy at St Cross), Richard Tyson, whose family provided and served a splendid tea for which the cost was waived.
The ground was not an easy one to save runs on and the short boundaries were well visited, in the first half, after Vinay and Phillips misery opening spell. Tex and the Emmins family bowled well and were unlucky to not have as much support as the field could have provided. Tom Hillman bowled well - not quite like 2021, but his time was to come......
RNVR innings got off to a shocker with Porter finding broken box in his trousers, and worse, ambling a second against a gun-arm. Hylton on his return to the UK was on fine form and Rupert Emmins was sneaky to survive and then explosive to finish. Where at one point all things were in bloom and the prospects were verdant the bowlers fought back and when Warnes failed to imply any - let alone enough displeasure at his dismissal as wicket number nine all was lost. Almost literally; as Nick Emmins had deflected a ball onto his ankle so well that he couldn't strap on a pad.
St Cross politely let the umpire bat 11 and an improbable chase for 70 runs in the last 13 overs started. 100-1 was offered and taken. It proved wise for the bookie. Despite a fleeting dream, the partnership amassed but 21, largely it will be seen, in extras, with no11 wearing a slow bouncer, a shot never previously attempted in 54 years, on his chin.
