Oxted & Limpsfield CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 05 Jun 2022 at 1pm
RNVR Cricket Club Lost by nine wickets
Match report
One of the shorter games in the RNVR canon that is not affected by rain at all.
Any longer and it might have been, but by then Oxted might have set us 200+ in the second innings.
Lost the toss and inserted - talk of a few wet patches under the covers, but Doug Porter and Reza Maroof seemed not to be troubled by those. Indeed the first 10 overs of hostile youth pace were uneventful. Doug recalls watching the certainty that Reza would be caught at short fine leg and being surprised that when he wasn't he was asked (asking??) for a quick single. It wasn't there. Gun arms and our 26 year old hero had a 2-0 victory this touring weekend.
While Eason and Dale found Nockles (son of Nockles - see matches past) play himself back into form after injury Reza watched on - knowing his moment would come. It did. And then his day too was over.
Kennedy and Sherry (along with Dale and Eason) represented the untired and the new legs in this all-star batting (to 11) line up, and they def had fresh legs.....Pepler fresh from the Killers concert on his day off set about Emmins (N) but there was always a chance that the senior ambassador had a trick up his sleeve, and while Pep's bat is new and hits the ball a long way, his pads, well they are pads, and his feet weren't fresh.
Phillips smote as usual, and as Umpire Nick Stevenson (with a "V") of Barnes and A&A observed seemed to be doing the right thing, for once Vinay didn't. Bert V looked every bit as bewildered on Sunday afternoon as he had done on Saturday morning and a low total was set. We kidded ourselves that it was only 50 shy.
The next 17 overs disproved that.
While the skipper's bowling order owed a lot to the belief that some of his bowlers net 52 weeks a year or play good league cricket it was too late by the time Hylts and Gordon came on to apply a break. The hundred was passed in the 13th over, sadly the openers having been separated by polite retirement at 97-0 in the 12th. Only a foolish skipper would have missed bowling the club's best bowler this season so far........
Sometime later the heavens opened, but we had cried into our beers before that.
