Home Park CC, (Eton College) v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 24 Apr 2022 at 2.30pm
RNVR Cricket Club Lost By 5 Wickets (or possibly 6 or 7)
Match report
RNVR v Home Park - Eton ; Sunday 24/4/22 Decl format, 20 from 6pm
Match was oversubscribed so agreed on a 13 players a side match.
Full RNVR Batting card would include...
batting 13, Thomas Hillman was 0 Not Out
batting 8 ,Piers Vacher was bowled first ball, an inglorious golden duck, putting Davinder in a bind....
Eton played 12 - their 12th bowled last and is employed as a rowing coach on the lake.
RNVR posted meagre and sorry total of 103/12 off 28 overs on a hard/dry pitch Home Park - Eton 107 / 5 off 22.5 overs RNVR Loss by 7 Wickets
Skipper Vacher's day started badly with the halyard breaking and the flag remaining for time immemorial until the groundsmen get a 'pink form' to get it down - hopefully in time for Hit or Miss....The toss was lost and Warnes fancied a bowl....or humiliation - he had seen the batting line up in advance.
Reza bowled behind his legs, 24 balls with only two balls hitting the bat, three extras the score, Tim baffled, CC given a nosebleed at no3 and the wrong info about the bowlers, (by the batman at the other end). Alex Warnes continues as a menace in the field and the home side were as sharp as expected with a large gaggle of youth on display.
Bertie Vacher, set about trying to dispatch the ball but he and Seabrook both perished to better balls than expected while CC looked to be playing himself into form, and then ultimately we all watched as Vinay and Rob P looked likely to stop the rot. Rob was keenly and unexpectedly snaffled square of the wicket to a ball the young Warnes might, in later life recognise as not his best. But as it was his first ball it only spurred him to greater things. A tail of Davinder Francis and Tom Hillman tried in vain to show up the top order but the only positive was passing 100 for the ultimate loss of 12 wickets.
Tea was mighty fine, and all the more so as the only remittances needed later were to pay for the shed load of beer smuggled onto the school premises by the former senior housemaster, clearly he too has learnt much in 20 years at Eton.
Defending 103 was always likely to be difficult, but in dredging all the advice first given to him by his predecessor as captain in the late 1990s Skipper was brilliantly saved by his bowlers with all able to bowl full and off stump. So much so that despite bowling to the school's one time 1st XI captain, Fulton, we enjoyed a mesmeric field for Vinay almost from the first ball. The rest rarely needed much less than a 7/2, and the first 19 overs had the home side at about 75-5. Sadly - and despite entirely accurate warning what would happen when Ross Cramp came to crease - the rest of the innings took no time. RC's first delivery was miscued and could easily have been caught with a wiser (hindsight) analysis of how he might play and a better field. The final over was bowled by Hillman who was unlucky not to have got a caught wicket.
Tex kindly promised to retrieve the flag and provided a lot of beer. Without the howling winds of 2021 these were very much enjoyed on the pavillion steps with the benefit of the full sunshine that the last twenty overs might have enjoyed. Bertie V, the most likely to recognise such things, declared the beaks of Eton far far cooler than any he had ever come across before.....possibly as others might have been more disapproving.......possibly.
Thank you to Tex and Tim Beard for their hospitality.
Good luck to RC who was playing his only game of the season, before shoulder surgery two days later. Despite managing the 3rd XI this term he may not play again until the RNVR return in 2023.......saints preserve us.........
