Hit or Miss CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 08 May 2022 at 2pm
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 86 runs

Match report At the sublimely named Hit or Miss (are there any other options) the sun was shining happily (surely a pathetic fallacy) and Hit or Miss started in the field. Hillman (dressed in jacket and jumper) offered to umpire along with Seabrook, confident (Hillman) that his attire would set him apart from the fielding team, although not so confident as to how to signal a no ball, and less so what a no ball actually was.

The Hit or Miss captain (Robbie Fryer) opened the bowling left arm over and drifted in front of the RNVR openers to some success, contributing to keeping the score down to 14 for 0 off 7. It was masterful play by Hardman to keep the wicket open and wear down the lead bowlers in the blazing sun, a tactic used to such effect previously.

Reza waited for his moment and eventually there came a 4 followed closely by another 4 and the RNVR batting was in business.

Hillman and Seabrook were replaced without having to make any difficult umpiring decisions and then a wicket fell, then another. Reza lbw for 21. Indeed Hit or Miss bowling was of a high standard however fortunately for RNVR a number of good and well deserved opportunities for catches were missed. Not hit!

The match was a declaration game and RNVR kept sailing straight through the afternoon sun. Theo came on and scored a quick 52. Going from 48 to 52 with a 4. And was then bowled next ball.

Michael Saunders played captain's cricket scoring 30.

Also batting particularly worthy of mention was Tony "Happy Days" Oudejans, whom it was indeed a happy day to see. One 6 in particular stood out, like a cruise missile it floated almost parallel to the ground, with a trajectory of approx 4 degrees. 44 in total.

RNVR declared at 209 and this was followed by a superb tea. The first indeed since the pandemic at Hit or Miss.

In the next innings Hit or Miss started with a contention for sportsman of the year award with the opening bat given lbw for a golden duck off Kumar. However after this promising start for RNVR the number 3 sought to make the game competitive by hitting and not missing. Caught eventually at 34 by CC off Seabrook bowling.

However it was not just a catch. The ball bounced in and out of CC's grip at least 3 times until with tenacity and determination the 4th contact secured control.

RNVR began to hope.

Credit must go to the opening RNVR bowlers (Kumar achieved 4 high quality wickets) and tight RNVR fielding, with the possible exception of Hillman who dropped a straightforward albeit low catch at square leg.

However once Tex began to bowl the match became a display of beauty from an RNVR perspective. The slow medium swing seemed to defy the laws of physics and even the 4 batsmen who were out for 8 runs appeared to have been pleased just to witness the curving ball.

This 3 over spell included ww.w.. the last caught and bowled.

The scene was set to give Theo and Hillman a bowl. 20 overs, over 100 runs in hand, 1 wicket to win.

The Hit and Miss batsmen, who by this time were playing for a draw, survived 7 or 8 overs of excellent bowling by Theo and varied bowling by Hillman, who whilst delighted to bowl only 2 wides was never quite sure where the ball was going, and this sense of general confusion perhaps assisted.

In the end Hillman managed a random decent ball which cut in to take the last wicket.

In the Hit or Miss pub later the conversation turned to Winchester, and with an even tally of one loss one win for RNVR the season is all to play for. God willing.

All in all a superb and enjoyable game at a superb and friendly club host.
