Tom Beard Memorial XI v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 17 Jul 2022 at 2.30pm
RNVR Cricket Club Won 36 runs
Match report
The 2nd outing for this fixture saw the selectors inbox rise, fall, rise again, fall again, and finally settle on a strong 10 with the promise of negotiating an 11th with Alex on the day.
London, Sunday, 3 cars loaded up with passengers, headed off early in order to not be defeated by coast bound traffic or sudden road closures that befuddled last years return trip.
All, including a number of the opposition assembled for pre-match fish and chips and motivational talk... well images of Gordon Kennedy playing a match off the coast of North Norfolk on a tidal sandbank.
It was a hot day, but nothing by comparison to what was over the horizon. A Beard and B Dale negotiated the toss and a declaration game agreed saw RNVR padding up and frantically re-ordering the pre-ordered batting line up to included the newly acquired 11th player in the form of the familiar R Eason.
Maroof and Vacher came and went a little quicker than anticipated and in doing so ensured a rather hurried up Club Captain Charlie Crichton a little quicker than desired, in the flurry CCCC forgot how to tie his own laces… meaning a lengthy delay, it's a good job we don't play league cricket. The skipper does shoulder some of the blame, having hidden the laces in the scorebook. Once out in the middle CCCC Proceeded to race along at a run-a-ball, Hewens and Hardman came and went, but Eason stuck around for a useful partnership of 49, Pepler joined so as to see CCCC to his 50. Having done that job Pepler departed and clearly upset at loosing a number of partners CCCC decided to return to the pavilion himself, via being bowled for 56. Kumar and Dale had a cameo partnership of 33 until VK decided to use his knee as a bat, a strange decision. Dale left shortly after much to the delight of Paterson for the oppo. Hillman and Ranu looked good but troubled no one. 154 total seemed modest but hopefully defendable.
There was a spectacular cake fest for tea. Pepler, who's sandwich was demolished by Vacher's wild beast Moose within 0.25 seconds of arrival, was more grateful than most at the vast selection of sweet treats.
With a number of familiar faces in the oppos line up: Jono VP, Rob Paterson, James Bamford and Alex Beard of course, there were plenty of opinions on what and where batting weaknesses were. Ultimately the deciding factors were hinged around tidy and tight bowling being supported by catches held - CATCHES HELD - with the top 6 succumbing to the phrase ‘you don’t know how unlucky you are’, ie all caught. Eason holding 3, including a magnificent C&B as well as the finishing touch/catch to a bowling plan that came off to dismiss JVP. Paterson and Badger for the TBXI offered some promise but both were cut short by catches in the field, Badger by a sub fielder from TBXI, much to his, the fielder, disgust/frustration/amusement... conflicted emotions... and Paterson from a leaping Dale by way of revenge for the earlier clean bowled. So, fine fielding for once supporting fine bowling: Kumar conceding only 8 runs for his 2 wkts from 7 overs, Ranu just 24 runs for his wkt from 7 overs. Vacher took a deserved 2 wkt haul. Hardman and Hillman had the chance to sharpen their art. Hewens had to be taken off for bowling too well… 4-2-3-4 inc a triple wicket maiden!! Eason providing the coup de grâce with his c&b off his first and only ball of his ’spell’
Ultimately the score was not important. The fixture is in memory of Alex’s brother Tom, who’s enthusiasm for cricket was as captivating as it was infectious. To be able to participate and contribute to the continuation of his memory through this match is for us a pleasure and a privilege, and, we hope, for Alex and his family.
A beer and a burger back at Alex’s uncle and aunt’s house with moving and poignant words from Alex concluded a fine summers day of cricket in the right spirit and for a good cause.
