Given that the UEFA Euro2020 Final was held on the same day as the Lindfield match - 11th July 2021, the duty match manager was scampering to get a full side out all the way down to the wire on Saturday evening. A bit of horse trading with the Barnes wing of RNVR and a wee bit of bribery and corruption, we managed to get a full side out thanks to Laurie Cadle who was on duty working till 12 noon in Barnes, so quick change and grabbing kit, Laurie was on his way. Arrangements were made to meet at 12 noon the Stand-Up Inn, but only the sole sad sack - MM Reza duly turned up early thanks to light traffic on the M25, and took some light lunch and refreshments.
Skipper for the day Hylton, won the toss and elected to field and made arrangements for an extra fielder – thanks very much to Lindfield for accommodating us until Laurie turned up. Lindfield started the innings at a slow pace due to some very tight bowling in first spell from both openers Vinay and Hylton, with 22 runs on the board for 2 wickets in the first 12 overs. Hylton with an LBW and then a screamer of a catch by Laurie at first slip off Vinay. Opposition then steadily increased the run rate to around 4 an over at 20 overs building a great partnership of 114 between young SA J Butler and M Perelch with the inevitable change of bowling with Piers, Francis and then all-rounder Fordy chipping in with 4 overs 35 for 1 – clean bowled and breaking the partnership in the 29th over. Piers bowled well and was unlucky not grab a caught and bowled wicket finishing with 0 / 49 off 6 overs, with a straight drive which only just grazed his fingers at full stretch. Second spells from openers Vinay and Hylton relatively miserly, with Butler attempting to push the run rate and being successful on the odd occasion and scoring a well-deserved century, when he finally succumbed to a Hylton delivery which he expected to be quicker and hitting skywards with Hillman under it, and there was no way Tom was dropping that catch – great cricket all round. Hylton picked a further wicket to end up with 3 for 19 off 10 overs and Francis picked 2 late wickets in the last over finishing with 2 for 46 off 11 overs. The last wicket was quick thinking by the alert Bertie Vacher who nicked the bails whilst the batsman wondered off the crease with 2 balls left in the last over. Lindfield ended up with 184 off 41 overs leaving 185 to win off 39. It has to be noted that Fordy was pushing the team on the over rate to ensure we finished early to watch the Euro Final – more on this later!
A 25-minute lunch break, and openers Reza and Laurie came out at 3:30 and steadily went about the business of clawing back the deficit and averaging at the rate of 3.5 runs an over until the 20th over when we were level pegging with Lindfield. Whilst Laurie as per usual was cultured and measured in his approach, Reza attempted to push the run rate to 4 over an over throughout the innings steadily increasing as the overs progressed. Laurie scored 21 and timed shots to perfection, one classic cover drive sadly uphill and long grass stalling the ball’s progress to the boundary, but certainly deserved a 4 and I deserved a rest as we ran too many singles. An opening partnership of 75 off 17 overs was a great start and Tim came in before being caught for 1 on the 22 over with the score at 87. Next to come in was Vinay, who was on the same page steadily increasing the run rate, with RNVR at 30 overs were 134 and at 35 overs 170. A solid and unbeaten partnership of 101, where Vinay score 4s but also taking regular singles to churn the strike resulted in another RNVR victory, and Reza ending up with 108no although quite fortunate to survive being dropped after posting 50 and whilst on 96 the ball hitting the top of the bails which failed to budge and survived several LBWs, whilst Vinays innings was a chanceless 34no during the 37th over, with 2.2 overs to spare.
Post presentation of the 75th RNVR anniversary jug, Skipper Hylton pulls out a bottle of smooth whisky following the traditions of the Cambridge tour. Fordy and Piers (and Vinay) are noted to have a penchant for a wee dram from a nice bottle. What ensued was a lovely relaxed evening post match glow, polishing off the said bottle with Fordy and Hylton at the heart of trouble. Meanwhile the Euro Final had already started, England had scored [load uproar in the village] and was close to half time by the time we decided it was time to make tracks.
