Streatham & Marlborough CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 13 Jun 2021 at 1pm
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 115 runs
Match report
The hottest day of the year (so far) was present for the RNVRs game against Streatham & Marlborough CC. With only 5 players present for the 1pm start time, the skipper won the toss and elected to bat first in the tropical heat.
This proved to be a masterful decision in hindsight as the S&M team slowly wilted being in the field for close to 4 hours for their 40 overs thanks to more than 200 field changes across the 240 ball innings.
Reza and Vinay opened up and saw off the new ball with solid defence, although there was little value for shots, as the outfield hadn’t seen a lawnmower yet in 2021. After Reza fell LBW, the skipper joined in and steadily built up a partnership with Vinay against some testing early bowling. 91-1 at the halfway stage and things were poised for the innings to open up, and open up they did.
A partnership of 186 in 23 overs before Colin fell to a blinding catch at long on for an entertaining 87. Vinay continued the good work however, and kept the momentum going, reaching his first RNVR ton, a quality and chance-less 102; well batted Vin!
As the scramble for late runs continued, amid a few run-outs, some late hitting from Bertie Vacher and Tim, got the total up to an above-par 268, as the clearly dejected S&M re-hydrated at the break.
Basking in the glow of England’s 1-0 win over Croatia in Euro 202(0) that was occurring simultaneously on the “big screen” next to the ground, RNVR set out with a pace and spin opening attack of Vinay and Ben. Confounded by the differential in pace between the two opening bowlers, S&M were completely at sea against Ben’s outstanding spell of unchanged 8-4-7-3, which ripped the heart out of the S&M top order.
Ed H with 3 more classy wickets followed, and with a wicket apiece from Andy Craig and Alex, and the S&M batting was truly in disarray at the daunting total facing them. It was left to none other than club captain CC to finish off the last man after a late order flurry, clean bowled once again.
A resounding victory from the RNVR in a well-paced innings, some great individual performances, but tip of the hat for today, definitely goes to Vinay (2nd place: Ben Dale).
