Cuckfield CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Wed 09 Aug 1961 at 11.30am
RNVR Cricket Club Lost by an INNINGS and 22 runs
Match report
Without doubt the largest defeat in RNVR history.
A year after acceding to the Captaincy of Cuckfield CC, but then playing for the RNVR, in a rare visitor victory, Geoffrey leads his side to a massive win in 1961.
If one assumes that the day had started off with the normal format anticipated, then CCC won by 6 wickets with Mr Bassano and Mildred at the crease at about 4.10pm
In which case only a wicket each for Cross and Cox and a pair for Connolly would count, but history tells another tale......
Cuckfield declare at 5.26pm having accelerated to 208 for 8 decl, and had time for a 19 minute tea (4.31pm-4.50pm), so scored an unlikely 83 in the session from 4.50pm to 5.27pm. A period of feasting in which the RNVR's 9th bowler Patrick Sergeant took his wicket........while Peter Connolly only conceded 6 runs in a second spell of 4-2-6-1, so Hensher and James took the brunt.
CCCs run rate
50 in 45 mins
100 in 80 mins
150 in 111 mins
200 in 132 mins
And Bassanos 50 in 55 mins
The RNVR second innings starts at 5.40pm and is over at about 7pm - A fairly high proportion (56 x 91 = 62%) of RNVR 2nd innings are boundaries.....Entertainment was not lacking!
It had all started so normally, but at 24-2 at 12.21pm (11.45am start) AGH sends in a lunch watchman with 55 minutes till lunch, Tony James, inked to bat at 8 is promoted. He survives the last three balls of Heath's opening over ( the 11th), but after a single off the first of Gould's spell is out. Is it possible that players were as tardy to arrive in 1961 as later years? Is that the birth of the arrive 20 minutes early we are guests thing on the fixture card??
By lunch at 1.15pm, RNVR are 7 down for 90 , and lost Cross to the first ball after the resumption, with Ashford gone to the 3rd. 10 down.
Innings over 12 minutes after lunch, at 2.41pm.
The "first" job of passing 91 is done in 75 minutes and then the entertainment started!
Just before he became a Published Author, President and opening bat Geoffrey Longfield recalled:
Piers you have disturbed the Muse and this reply will be nearly as long as my book “70 Years at the Crease”. You will be delighted to hear that the book has been printed but disappointed that “the Launch” is being postponed until the Covid Restrictions have been eased. Someone suggested a Launch on Wed 4/8/2021 (the RNVR game) but this is too late in the season.
As you say 1961 was my first year skippering Cuckfield, Tony Cahill having resigned after 4 years (1957-1960). I can remember all the Cuckfield players but only 3 RNVR. I opened with our wicket keeper Brian Rodin and then came Tony Gould who was probably in his last year at Ardingly College (Tony’s brother John was later captain of Lindfield). No 4 was Richard Roberts, a regular player, who later moved away to the Tonbridge area. I heard of him last year playing golf at Knowle Park, I think,
Brian Bassano who came from South Africa played Cricket at Ansty and was guesting for us and of course made top score of 78. John Mildred was a left arm opening bowler and Barry Galbraith played little but his twin brother Martin was a good left arm slow bowler. At no 8 W.S.H.Garforth our one legged (a tin leg) batsman whose house at Ansty now belongs to Jon and Marion Petitpierre. You allowed Bill to score 25 – just as well for RNVR that he was handicapped! Ray Tidey (another Ansty resident) was over 6 feet tall but was not quick enough to worry the batsmen. Jeremy Thacker later regularly opened the bowling with Tim Peacock. Lastly Roger Heath a local lad and useful bowler.
I have to admit that I did not see or pay any attention to our great win vs RNVR when going through the old scorebooks.
After all it was not Cuckfield’s biggest win, only an innings plus 22 runs!
In an all day game v Preston Nomads in 1966 the victory margin was innings plus 54 runs. Nomads one of our strongest opponents batted first and by lunch had been dismissed for 55. During the afternoon (despite the celebratory lunch) Cuckfield scored 172 for 5 declared and then after tea shot Nomads out for 63.
